Some armaments in Elden Ring will require players to gather Somber Smithing Stones, which they can buy from vendors by acquiring all Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings. Although the majority of the game’s weapons will require regular Smithing Stones to be upgraded, there are a considerable number of armaments that will instead require Somber Smithing Stones. These armaments often include those acquired through bosses’ remembrances in Elden Ring and the majority of other unique weapons in the game.
A major difference between Somber Smithing Stones and the regular variety is that players will only need one of each rank to fully upgrade armaments. Additionally, equipment that requires Somber Smithing Stones is only upgradable to +10, meaning that players will only need a total of 10 (one from each rank) to max it out. Because this requires so few materials, it is actually possible to upgrade a Somber Armamament all the way to +9 at the very beginning of the game without having to kill a single boss. It is also important to note that players will be able to buy the first ranks of Somber Smithing Stones from Master Iji without having to find a single Miner’s Bell Bearing.
The Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings can be given to the Twin Maiden Husks in Elden Ring‘s hub, Roundtable Hold, to allow players to buy Somber Smithing Stones from this merchant. Each rank of the Miner’s Bell Bearings will unlock two ranks of Somber Smithing Stones, but the last will only unlock rank nine, as the final material required to fully upgrade an armament, the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, cannot be repeatedly bought in Elden Ring. The Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is one of the rarest upgrade materials in the game, as each playthrough only provides the opportunity to find a total of eight.

Where To Find Sombestone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1] In Elden Ring
The first Miner’s Bell Bearing can be acquired by defeating the Fallingstar Beast in the Sellia Crystal Tunnel in the easternmost region in Elden Ring, Caelid. Getting to this location is relatively easy, as players just need to head to the southern part of the lake in Limgrave that is east of the First Step Site of Grace. There, they will find the Dragon-Burnt Ruins, and in the middle of the camp, a set of stairs that leads to a chest that transports players to the Crystal Tunnel. After that, simply proceed further into the mines to find the mist gate leading to the boss.
This boss can be extremely difficult, especially during the early game, as it is very resistant to physical damage and it is quite large for the arena players must fight it in. It is advisable to keep the Fallingstar Beast away from the middle since, during the second phase, it will start doing a big area-of-effect attack around it that can cover most of the room if poorly placed. Those wishing to skip this Miner’s Bell Bearing during the early game in Elden Ring won’t lose much, as they can instead find Master Iji in Liurnia of the Lakes, who sells an unlimited amount of the two first ranks of Somber Smithing Stones and a few of ranks four and five.

To get the second Miner’s Bell Bearing, players will first need to reach Altus Plateau, either by acquiring the two halves of the medallion or going through the Ravine-Veiled Village. Players that wish to steer clear of boss fights should avoid the latter option, as that path will eventually lead them to Magma Wymr Makar. Players can find the left half of the medallion in Fort Haight in eastern Limgrave, Elden Ring‘s starting region, and the right half in Fort Faroth in Caelid. In both instances, the items can be looted from a chest located atop the forts.
After getting to Altus Plateau, players should be able to easily find and reach the Altus Tunnel, where they will have to fight a boss duo of a Crystalian Spearman and a Ringblade-using Crystalian. These bosses are highly resistant to most forms of damage until players manage to break their poise and critically hit them, which will heavily lower their defenses. To break an enemy’s poise, players must perform charged attacks or jumping heavy attacks as constantly as possible since enemies start to recover poise after getting hit.

The third Miner’s Bell Bearing is the first that is not looted from a boss in Elden Ring but will require players to defeat several to get to it. This is because the item must be looted from a body that is near the entrance to the First Church of Marika, in the Mountaintops of the Giants, a late-game area in Elden Ring. To get there, players will need the Rold Medallion to be able to use the Grand Lift of Rold. This item is given to the player by Melina after they defeat Morgott, the Omen King, who himself can only be faced after players defeat the golden shade of Godfrey, the First Elden Lord in Leyndell, the Royal Capital.

Acquiring the fourth Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing will require players to proceed to the final stage of the game that is set in Crumbling Farum Azula. To reach this region, players will first need to defeat the Fire Giant in Elden Ring, which is located at Flame Peak in the Mountaintops of the Giants. After that, players must use the Site of Grace and, depending on players’ previous choices, they can either talk to Melina or “Listen to the sound of flames” to be teleported to Crumbling Farum Azula. After that, they must simply progress through the area until they reach the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace and loot the Miner’s Bell Bearing from a corpse that is near it on the ledge.

The final Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing is also located near the end of Elden Ring in Crumbling Farum Azula but to the northeast inside a small church. Starting from the Dragon Temple Rooftop Site of Grace, players should jump down the rooftops and head southeast towards the dragon that spawns red lighting on the ground. Then, head west to proceed under a giant archway and follow the narrow path on the right that leads to a ravine. Bridging that ravine is a crumbling white tower, that players can use to get to the other side where they will find the small church, and inside it, the last Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing.
Elden Ring is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
