Wiki/Biography
Brijmohan Bhardwaj was born in Sahroi village of Khair city in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. While in school, he often contemplated situations such as poverty and suffering or death caused by lack of food and shelter. After schooling from Aligarh, he studied BAMS. Dr. Brijmohan is an ardent follower of Lord Krishna since childhood.
While going to college, he met his future wife Madhuri Bhardwaj, who was studying in the ninth grade in a school in Aligarh. Both Madhuri and Mohan used to travel by bus to school and college respectively. On the bus, they will discuss a topic unusual for two teenagers. They will talk about their shared dream; A meaningful life, dedicated to helping the needy. In Madhuri he found an echo of his mission. Mohan and Madhuri planned to become partners in this venture. Eight years after their meeting, they decided to become life partners and got married on 8 December 1993. However, they decided never to have children of their own; Because he wanted to focus all his energy on the sick and the homeless. Both of them became doctors and started bringing sick people lying abandoned on the streets to their homes.
inspired by a baba
When he was five years old, a Baba named ‘Chiranji Baba’ died in his village Sahroi. Brijmohan Bhardwaj is saddened by his demise. Chiranji Baba was an 85-year-old destitute man who spent his days as a shepherd for the villagers. Chiranji Baba never married and lived alone in the village. However, when Chiranji Baba fell ill, no one came to help him and he eventually died. Recalling that incident he says,
It’s not that no one wanted to help him. Everyone did it. But they held back from taking the responsibility, fearing that it would put a burden on their pockets. People will help if someone takes responsibility and shows others how they can help.
Although Brij Mohan Bhardwaj was too young to help Chiranji Baba, this incident left an impression on Bhardwaj’s mind and it inspired him to help the sick and act and be able to save lives.
Apna Ghar: Where Humanity Lives
Seven years after their marriage, Dr. Brij Mohan Bhardwaj and Dr. Madhuri Bhardwaj established ‘Maa Madhuri Brij Waris Seva Sadan, Apna Ghar’ in Bharatpur, Rajasthan on 29 June 2000, Madhuri’s 27th birthday. Apna Ghar became a home for the homeless and destitute, the sick and the lost who were found wandering in public places. Today, there are 21 ashrams across India – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, which provide shelter to the sick and homeless. Volunteers of Apna Ghar Seva Samitis have set up Apna Ghar helpline, which provides immediate services to the homeless and destitute. More than 30 ambulances work day and night to take them to ashrams for relief.
Funding and expenditure
Although most ashrams run on public support, the ashrams in Kota and Ajmer are partially supported by the Government of Rajasthan. Every ashram puts up a board outside it; Referring to the daily needs of the ashrams, and these are often met by donations from visitors. The organization frequently runs crowdfunding campaigns to raise costs.
