Two days after being attacked and beaten in a cell, the former nurse dubbed the “Angel of Death” after confessing to killing 32 patients in Ohio and Kentucky passed away on Thursday.
Donald Harvey, who has served multiple life sentences, was found wounded in his cell at Toledo State Prison Tuesday afternoon, according to officials. He was 64 years old.
He was beaten when an unidentified person entered his cell, according to a patrol report, although details of the assault were withheld.
In 1987, Harvey confessed to killing 37 people – most of them patients in Cincinnati and London, Kentucky, the hospitals where he worked as a nurse. He later testified that while working at the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center, he killed 18 other people.
While working at Marymount Hospital in Kentucky in 1970, he informed his former attorney that the murders had begun. He said he was trying to end the suffering of his victims, and many of them were patients with chronic illnesses.
According to prosecutors, Harvey poisoned most of his victims with arsenic and cyanide, often mixing them into hospital meals he gave them. He let some patients’ oxygen tanks run dry, causing some to suffocate.
Harvey worked as a nurse assistant at Drake Memorial Hospital previously in Cincinnati, where the 21 victims he killed were all patients. After the coroner smelled cyanide during the autopsy, he was arrested.
Harvey told a reporter that he likes to have control over who lives and dies after pleading guilty to avoid the death penalty.
