Don Spike, an internationally renowned K-pop musician, was sentenced to three years in prison and probation after being found guilty of drug possession and abuse. On January 9, the artist faced his first trial at the Seoul District Court for violating various laws prohibiting the possession and use of psychotropic drugs and narcotics, including the Severe Punishment Act. for some crimes.
In addition to three years in prison, the 45-year-old artist was also sentenced to five years of probation and 80 hours of drug training as part of her rehabilitation. He was also ordered to perform 120 hours of community service and pay a fine of 40 million won. According to the court’s decision, Don Spike received a lighter sentence than the five-year prison sentence demanded by the prosecution. At the initial stage of the trial, he pleaded guilty, and his family and relatives filed various requests. The judgment states:
“The support of his family and those close to him was taken into account (in the sentence) as it could prevent recidivism.”
Don Spike has spent more than 45 million won on drugs since 2021.
Kim Min-su, also known as Don Spike, was arrested on September 28, 2022 at a hotel in the Gangnam district, Seoul, on charges of violating the Drug Control Act. The musician allegedly took 45 million won worth of methamphetamine and used it for entertainment more than fourteen times. According to a ruling by the Seoul North District Court, Min-su obtained more than one hundred grams of methamphetamine and persuaded others to engage in recreational drug consumption. The decree further explains the reasons for punishing artists:
“Given the seriousness of the charges, the defendant purchased more than 100 grams of methamphetamine and caused many people to abuse the substance.”
Possession, production or consumption of drugs with a street value of at least 5 million won to less than 50 million won is punishable by up to 3 years in prison in South Korea. The minimum sentence for possession of drugs worth more than 50 million won is 7 years in prison. Don Spike spoke to reporters after police arrested him and confirmed the allegations were true. Kim Min-su pleaded guilty to the charges against him during his trial in December.
At the time of his arrest, he had about 30 grams of cocaine, enough for nearly 600 uses. Spike is facing a third drug abuse charge.
