Career

In the process, he defeated Michael Phelps, who perhaps had not been swimming to his best in the quarterfinals, to become the first Swiss swimmer to be the top seed heading into the semifinals.

He placed sixth in the 200 m freestyle final (Phelps won the race, swimming more than 2.5 seconds ahead of Meichtry). He was also the first Swiss to break the 49-second barrier by starting the 4×100 freestyle relay in 48.96 seconds. Later in the race, he lowered his record in the 100 freestyle to 48.55.
