Dolly Parton turned a dream into reality for a devoted fan.
Utah resident and lifelong fan of the country music icon, LeGrand Gold, is facing a devastating diagnosis of stage four colorectal cancer. Determined to lift her spirits, Gold made a wish list. That list included, naturally, a reunion with Dolly Parton.
In a touching twist just before Christmas, the “Jolene” singer, 77, surprised Gold with a phone call. This helped him fulfill a crucial item on her wish list. The call, during which Parton even incorporated Gold’s name into a song, left him feeling “immortal,” as he shared with local NBC affiliate KSL.
Gold’s wife, Alice, expressed the profound impact the call had on their family. She stated: “Of the 11 elements [on the list]”We thought Dolly would be the impossible, but true to form, she once again reminds the world that dreams really do come true.”
Dolly Parton calls a terminally ill fan and fulfills his last wish
A video of the call, posted on YouTube, captures Parton addressing Gold as “LG” and playfully introducing herself as “Dolly P.”
Expressing her gratitude for having a devoted fan like Gold and acknowledging their shared journey over the years, Parton shared, “I always want to make people happy with my music and the things I do and say, and I’m just happy. to know that I have touched your life in some way. So thank you for honoring me with that.”
During the call, Gold expressed how Parton had been a great source of support during her battle with cancer. Both he and Alice praised both his music and his character. The couple also highlighted Parton’s book donation program, Imagination Library, as a valuable resource for their children.
Concluding the call, Parton assured Gold that she will “always love him.” Then he added a playful comment: “I should have sung that, right?” Of course, Parton quickly made good on that promise: He adapted her famous lyrics to declare, “I’ll always love LG.”
Gold, a father of five and a computer programmer, is a native of Tennessee. He frequents Parton’s Dollywood theme park. Last year, while Gold was dealing with his health problems, Alice conceived the “LG Life List” on a napkin. She described nearly a dozen things that needed to be accomplished before her passing.
The list included things like attending a March Madness game, attending a Natalie Merchant concert and embarking on an RV road trip. Together with his wife, Gold managed to cross several items off the list. Parton’s call is the ultimate fulfillment.
Following his cancer diagnosis and its subsequent spread to his lymph nodes and liver, Gold was given a prognosis of less than six months to live in September 2021. This was attributed to liver failure. A GoFundMe page has been created to support Gold’s family during this difficult time.
Despite his health problems, Gold and his family are savoring the holiday season. They continue to work on completing the remaining items on their wish list. Among their next plans is a fake wedding on January 13. This will give her four daughters the opportunity for a memorable father-daughter dance with her beloved father.
