There are a number of features people expect from a modern smartphone – especially high-priced ones like the iPhone 13. This can include a high-quality display, fast performance, great cameras. , etc. However, as with all consumer technology, some trends come and go.
Just a few years ago it was standard practice for every cell phone to have a 3.5mm headphone jack. Today, this is no longer true. The same goes for removable batteries. Once upon a time, it seemed like every smartphone came with a user-replaceable battery. For modern phones, this is almost extinct. Keeping up with changing trends can be a lot to remember. Like it or not, this is how the smartphone world works.
One of the features that is starting to come into question is the charging port. Some companies like Vivo and Meizu are testing the water by releasing phones without any physical charging ports, rather than relying entirely on wireless charging. There have been rumors about the iPhone for a long time. Many rumors suggest that the iPhone 13 will be the first iPhone without a charging port. Turns out, that’s not true at all. Whether someone buys an iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, or iPhone 13 Pro Max, all four models have the same Lightning charging port.
Future iPhones may not have a charging port
It may seem silly to worry about whether your phone has a charging port, but in the case of the iPhone, it’s almost an annual question. Before each new iPhone is released, rumors of an upcoming portless model begin to swirl. Some confirmed these rumors, others denied them, and it turns out that new iPhones always have a charging port. However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be an iPhone in the future without it.
While Apple hasn’t confirmed anything in this regard, there are some indications that the future of the iPhone will be portless. For starters, MagSafe, released with the iPhone 12, is Apple’s way of experimenting with a new charging solution — one that doesn’t require a charging port. MagSafe is already on the iPhone 13 and is becoming increasingly popular with a variety of first- and third-party accessories. Add to that the fact that Apple hasn’t changed/upgraded the Lightning charging port since 2012, and it’s not hard to imagine that there will eventually be a Lightning-free phone model specifically for MagSafe.
As for when all of this will happen, it remains a mystery and anyone can guess. For now, however, all you need to know is that Apple’s iPhone 13 series still has the familiar charging port. That may change someday, but not right now.
Future iPhones will have USB-C
The iPhone 14 has the same Lightning connector for charging as the iPhone 13 series, but the charging port will change with the iPhone 15. Apple is finally switching to USB-C in its 2023 iPhones, but not voluntarily. The EU requires all phones sold in the region to switch to a USB-C charging port, meaning Apple has no choice but to comply. Apple has almost admitted that it will use USB-C on the iPhone 15, and several reports have confirmed this.
Currently, having a charging port is better than having a smartphone without one. The latter requires an investment in more expensive wireless charging or a MagSafe accessory, which not all users want or enjoy using. USB-C will also make it easier to use the same charging cable for multiple devices. The iPad line has switched to USB-C, and modern MacBooks are also equipped with this port. So while iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 owners will have to contend with using the outdated Lightning connector, that’s about to change for the iPhone 15 series.
