The Russian professional cyclist tested positive for COVID-19.
Dmitry Strakhov, the Russian professional cyclist, confirmed the news through an Instagram post on Tuesday, March 10, 2020. It has been several weeks since the Russian team was quarantined in a hotel in Abu Dhabi due to the spread of COVID -19. And from the Gazprom-RusVelo team, three cyclists were hospitalized for additional tests. One of them is Dmitry Strakhov, who wrote on Gazprom, the official Instagram account of the RusVelo cycling team @rusvelocycling:
“After passing the fifth test at the hotel, they told me that I have a positive result for coronavirus and I need to go to the hospital. It is true that I did not see the results of the analyzes. The hospital ran additional tests, performed a blood test and promised to report the results in the near future. I’m waiting. “I feel good, I continued and continue to follow all the security measures, I hope this situation is resolved soon”
Dmitry said he is in good health but is in hospital and is also the first cyclist to test positive for COVID-19 after the UAE Tour was abruptly stopped. The authority kept all the runners and race staff in the hotels while they carried out the tests.
Strakhov and the team were in the United Arab Emirates participating in the UAE team when the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic spread across the country. Authorities allowed approximately 500 people to leave the United Arab Emirates after a few days of the coronavirus outbreak.
In addition, the authority released the French cycling teams Cofidis and Groupama-FDJ over the weekend. Cofidis team president Thierry Vittu said on Wednesday that he was ordered to remain in quarantine until March 14, after which the team was allowed to leave the country. However, the Russian cycling team Gazprom and the teams and staff of the UAE Team Emirates of the UAE Tour remained in quarantine at the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island hotel.

Are there other positive cases?
Among the runners, local authorities confirmed two positive cases of CoronaVirus initially in one team. However, the UAE Ministry of Health said in a statement that there were six confirmed cases. Among them were two Russians, two Italians, a German and a Colombian.
Besides, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported the same week that there were twelve cases related to the UAE Tour, including four riders who tested positive for the virus. Of all the positive cases, some were transferred to specialized medical units. In addition, the Italian consulate stated that all Italians are well and are not in serious condition.
Although they did not publish the names of the riders who tested positive, one of them was suspected to be Fernando Gaviria, who has now been tested and confirmed positive. Only two Colombian riders were present for the UAE Tour. Among them was Hernando Bohórquez from Astana, who was allowed to leave the country after the COVID-19 outbreak.
Another Russian Gazprom team rider, Igor Boev, also confirmed to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti that he is in hospital after the diagnosis. This confirmation was at the beginning of March! He also said that the hospital food was good for a normal person, but not good enough for professional runners.
What happened to the Tour?
Additionally, they canceled the final two stages of the UAE Tour on February 28, following confirmation of two virus cases among team staff. They declared British cyclist Adam Yates the winner because he was leading after the first five stages of the Tour. Additionally, the UAE Team Emirates team decided to self-isolate when cases first emerged and there were unconfirmed reports that the first two cases of the virus were UAE Team Emirates staff who had traveled to the race from northern Italy.
The team announced on Sunday, March 1:
“Despite having received the green light to travel home and the latest tests carried out were negative, our team has decided to extend their stay in the United Arab Emirates to continue testing everyone’s conditions and return home only with the safety of the not contagion”.
Additionally, riders and staff have posted messages on social media in recent days as they wait for the end of their quarantine. Tadej Pogačar, the Slovenian cyclist, wrote on his website:
“Today, March 9, 2020, is the 11th day that I have been locked in ‘my’ hotel room. Actually, it’s not just mine, as I share it with my teammate Erik Bystrøm. We have training machines in our room, so we try to train at least a little. Of course, there is TV, Internet, Netflix and Playstation, so at least we can do something and pass the time. “I just hope everything goes as planned and I can go home at the end of next week.”
Additionally, Jeroen Swart, UAE Team Emirates’ chief medical officer, posted a photo of himself wearing a protective mask at the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island on Tuesday and photos of other team staff. His quarantine ended on March 14. UAE Team Emirates is among other major teams that have decided to withdraw from all races until the end of March. Other games that have canceled their tournaments until further notice are soccer and the NBA among many others.
