The couple has four daughters and a son. The names of his daughters are Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Meena Khadikar and Usha Mangeshkar. Lata Mangeshkar was his elder daughter and famous Indian playback singer, who died at the age of 92 on 6 February 2022 at Breach Candy Hospital Trust, Mumbai. His son’s name is Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

early life
Dinanath Mangeshkar’s family had roots in Portuguese India (present-day Goa) and he was born into a Mangeshi family. Dinanath’s father was a Karhade Brahmin who was the priest of the famous Mangeshi temple of Goa. However, his mother was born in the Devadasi community of Goa. They were called upon to sing and dance in religious, cultural and festival rituals and ceremonies held at the Mangeshi temple and had musical aptitude. She was the mistress of Dinanath’s father. The famous Gomantak Maratha community in Goa was later formed from the Devadasi community. The name of his village was Mangeshi which was situated in Goa. Dinanath’s father used the surname ‘Hardikar’ as his ancestors belonged to a priest family that performed the bathing ritual of the Linga of Lord Shiva in the Mangeshi temple. This ceremony was called ‘Abhishekam’. It was mentioned in the book ‘In Search of Lata Mangeshkar’, which was released in 1995 by Harish Bhimani. His ancestors and family were considered as the ‘Abhishekis’ of Goa. However, Dinanath was more attracted towards music and singing as his mother was a great singer and dancer. Later, in his teenage years, Dinanath changed his surname from Abhisheki to Mangeshkar, which means penis of Lord Shiva. In Goa, at the Mangeshi temple, the Linga of Lord Shiva is worshiped by the Abhisheki communities.

Dinanath Mangeshkar did not attend any school to receive formal education, but he started learning music and singing when he was five years old. His first teacher was Shri Baba Mashelkar and he learned music from him at Gwalior School. Soon after completing his music education from Maleshkar, he became the disciple of Gayanacharya Pandit Ramakrishnabua Vaze. Later, he attended the musical education of Pandit Sukhdev Prasad, father of the famous Indian classical singer Pandit Mani Prasad of the Kirana Gharana and an accomplished classical music instructor from Bikaner. Dinanath Mangeshkar started working with Kirloskar Sangeet Mandali and Kirloskar Natak Mandali at the age of eleven and started singing and presenting concerts on stages. Later, Dinanath Mangeshkar left the Kirloskar Natak Mandali and formed his own Balwant Mandali, which he established with his friends Chintamanrao Kolhatkar and Krishnarao Kolhapure.

Dinanath Mangeshkar was a very good looking man with an exceptionally melodious voice. Soon, he became a producer of several Marathi language stage shows and gained considerable publicity through his music shows and plays. Bal Gandharva, who was a famous face of Marathi theatre, offered Dinanath Mangeshkar to join his troupe and also said that when Dinanath would join his troupe he would throw money at Dinanath’s feet to welcome him.

Soon after gaining immense popularity in the Indian music industry, Dinanath Mangeshkar started producing films shot in both Hindi and Marathi languages in the 1930s. He began acting in his own written films, including Krishnarjuna Yudh. Songs from films were also filmed on them. Later, Dinanath Mangeshkar became a disciple of Ramakrishna Vaze to hone his Indian classical music skills.
