One Demon Slayer fan’s cosplay shows off the most precious version of Kamado Tanjiro yet. The protagonist’s journey from humble charcoal salesman to a demon-hunting swordsman turned into Japan’s hottest manga series since Fullmetal Alchemist and Attack on Titan, spawning a hit anime series. With Demon Slayer season 3 on the way, the manga’s completion is nowhere close to slowing the momentum of the intense action series, which consistently grows its fanbase and remains one of the world’s most successful fiction franchises.
Demon Slayer fans praise it for various reasons, namely Ufotable’s stunning animation work on the show, the incredible battles, and the eclectic cast of colorful characters. Tanjiro and his sister, Nezuko, are two standouts thanks to their wholesome personalities and love and admiration for one another as siblings. Tanjiro’s growth as a Demon Slayer Corpsman and status as an unconventional shōnen hero has made him one of Weekly Shōnen Jump’s flagship characters. Nezuko’s adorable baby form (due to her demon powers), on the other hand, has launched her into Internet stardom.
Content creator leiracosplays takes this dynamic and flips it into a new fan creation featuring an adult Nezuko and baby Tanjiro. Leira omits the box Tanjiro traditionally uses to carry Nezuko around, letting her son ride on mom’s back and play with him in the grass. But the Instagram posts, including a few photos and a video, show off screen-accurate costumes (aside from Nezuko’s bamboo muzzle) and the Kamado’s signature red-tinted hair. The quote in one post, “The bond between Nezuko and me, can’t be severed by anyone!” perfectly encapsulates the bond between mother and son represented in these posts. They are the words uttered by Tanjiro to Rui in Demon Slayer’s most famous fight, in which the protagonist attempts to save his sister from the Lower Moon’s clutches. Leira’s use of her son in various other cosplays is indicative of this kind of love and devotion, even if she isn’t fighting off any demons. Another post hints at a baby Zenitsu costume for the boy, which would be equally cute if his Tanjiro portrayal is any indication.
Leira and her child are the perfect examples of how cosplay can bring people together instead of just showcasing some talented artistry, though their outfits are impressive all the same. They also display the amusing alternate reality of Tanjiro and Nezuko in opposite situations, with Tanjiro the shrunken child and Nezuko the mature Demon Slayer. The flipped dynamic highlights the creative potential of cosplay to portray characters nontraditionally, and the comments accompanying Leira’s posts indicate that other Demon Slayer fans find the cosplay highly enjoyable. With season 3 of the anime on the horizon, it will be exciting to see what creation Leira and her family think up next.
