David Charles Weiss is a renowned American lawyer. He has been working as an official in the U.S. Department of Justice for the United States District Court in Delaware since 22 February 2018. He is also a member of the Delaware and Pennsylvania bars.

David Charles Weiss was born in 1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. After completing his school education, he joined Washington University in Saint Louis, United States to attain a bachelor’s degree in arts. He then pursued a doctor of jurisprudence at Widener University, Chester, Pennsylvania. Weiss’ father, Meyer Weiss, worked as an IRS agent in Philadelphia from 1955 to 1984. While serving as an IRS agent, Meyer was found guilty of accepting over $200,000 in bribes from businesspeople trying to evade federal tax rules. As a result, he was sentenced to four years in prison. According to a 1995 US tax court ruling, Meyer Weiss used nearly $71,020 of the bribe money to pay for David’s college and law school tuition.

In 1984, David Weiss started working as a law clerk for the Honorable Andrew D. Christie of the Delaware Supreme Court. From 1986 to 1989, David C. Weiss served as an Assistant United States Attorney, handling cases related to violent crimes and white-collar offences. During that time, he also worked as a commercial litigation associate at the United States Attorney’s Office. In 1989, David C. Weiss joined Duane Morris LLP as a commercial litigation associate. In 1999, he became a partner in the Duane Morris. Later, he worked for a financial services company called ‘The Siegfried Group’ as the chief operating officer and senior vice president.
In 1996, David C. Weiss’s firm represented the family of Anne Marie Fahey during his time as a lawyer in private practice. Anne Marie was a secretary to Delaware’s then-governor and went missing in 1996. He rejoined the Delaware U.S. Attorney’s office as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney in 2007. David C. Weiss led the prosecution of Christopher Tigani, a beer distributor who collected donations for Joe Biden’s unsuccessful 2008 presidential campaign. Later, Tigani was found guilty of breaking campaign finance laws. From 2009 to 2017, during the Obama administration, he served as the top deputy in the office and also held the position of interim U.S. attorney.
In 2017, David Weiss became the Acting United States Attorney for the District of Delaware. Before that, he served as the interim United States Attorney for the same district. In 2021, Weiss’ office faced a setback in a prominent corporate case. A federal appeals court overturned the convictions of four former Wilmington Trust executives who were accused of hiding troublesome loans after the 2008 financial crisis. He was officially appointed as an Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice through a voice vote on 15 February 2018. David C. Weiss took his oath of service on 22 February 2018.
He was appointed for his job by then-President Donald Trump in 2017. In 2018, he agreed to stay in his role during the Biden administration to complete a long investigation into Hunter Biden’s finances.

- He strongly supports the Republican Party in the U.S., and his inclination for the party is evident through his active involvement in local party activities.
- In February 2021, when President Biden took office, the Department of Justice (DOJ) asked Trump-appointed U.S. attorneys to resign. However, Weiss was an exception, and he was asked to stay in his position because of the ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden that began in 2018.
- In 2023, David Weiss was in charge of investigating Hunter Biden’s financial dealings. The Biden administration asked him to keep working on this case. However, in July 2023, David Charles Weiss faced criticism when he announced a plea agreement for Hunter Biden that included only probation.
