Dave Chappelle 2022 Hollywood Bowl Attacker Sues Venue, Security Staff

The man who attacked Dave Chappelle during an appearance at the 2022 Hollywood Bowl is now suing the venue and security staff.

In legal documents obtained by TMZ, the attacker, Isaiah Lee, stated that he ran up on stage to tackle the comedian in protest of jokes he had made earlier that night. Although he admitted to the assault, Lee claimed he was brutally beaten by security personnel there. He also claimed that they also intentionally spat on him and dislocated his elbow.

Lee later said security staff allowed Dave Chapelle’s entourage to beat him. also. He further explained that he had a knife that looked like a gun during the incident. However, he never took it out to use on the comedian. He just fell out of his pocket during the fight.

Lee went on to accuse the venue of being aware of Dave Chappelle’s reputation for telling offensive jokes. He noted that organizers should have taken steps to prevent possible harm that the jokes could cause. Among the jokes he was referring to were ableist transgender people.

The man is suing the venue and security staff for negligence and assault. He stated that following the incident he suffered back injuries, loss of mobility and dislocated his elbow. He also indicated that he had suffered other medical problems.

Lee did not include Dave Chapelle in the lawsuit. He previously accepted a plea deal and pleaded “no contest” to entering a restricted area and assault. Both are misdemeanors. He was subsequently sentenced to 270 days in jail.

Dave Chapelle previously spoke about speaking to Isaiah Lee following the Hollywood Bowl incident

Days after the Hollywood Bowl incident, Dave Chapelle spoke about meeting with his attacker Isaiah Lee to discuss the reasons for the attack.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Chapelle had told an audience at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles that he had convinced security at the Hollywood Bowl to allow him to speak to Lee about what happened.

“I needed to talk to him,” Dave Chapelle explained. Lee told the comedian a story about her Brooklyn grandmother, who had been forced to leave her neighborhood due to its gentrification. The attack was intended to be a way to draw attention to her situation.

Chris Rock, who had just received his now infamous Will Smith slap, spoke to Chappelle about his experience. “At least someone reputable slapped you!” Chapelle declared. “I was slapped by a homeless man with leaves in his hair.”

Rock responded, “I got hit by the smoothest black that ever rapped.”
