In addition, Pletka was appointed vice president for foreign and defense policy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a right-leaning think tank in Washington, DC, in March 2002. The Washington Post described her at the time of her hire as “a staunch conservative with a caustic manner.” Howard J. Wiarda claims that after she Pletka replaced Jeane Kirkpatrick, from whom she had a Ph.D. and was a tenured professor at Columbia University, there was some tension within AEI because Pletka was not an academic.

Howard J. Wiarda described Pletka as not a neoconservative, but Eli Lake described her as a known neoconservative. Jacob Heilbrunn stated in a 2008 commentary that Peltka had been “closely identified with neoconservative positions on Iraq and Iran. However, neoconservatives are now extremely hostile towards her, claiming that she is trying to eliminate neoconservative influence at AEI because she previously worked for Jesse Helms, who represented more conventional Republican foreign policy principles.
Pletka understood that she was “not a big fan of torture,” but argued that it might be justified in certain situations during a conflict, such as “if it’s absolutely imperative to find out at that moment.” Pletka criticized the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on CIA torture in 2014, which found the agency guilty of using torture methods. She argued that the CIA’s techniques produced usable intelligence and were legally permitted by the Justice Department, calling the report “Feinstein’s partisan tirade.”
In a 2020 op-ed for The Washington Post, Pletka expressed concern that Democratic nominee Joe Biden “begins an assault on the nation’s democracy-preserving government institutions with a small ‘d'” and expressed the possibility of that she “may be forced to vote for” incumbent Republican President Donald Trump because he “wears his sins on the outside.” Alexandra Petri of the Washington Post mocked this opinion piece in an article titled “I Can’t Believe You’re Forcing Me to vote for Trump, which I definitely didn’t want to do.”
