Dance Brothers will be on Netflix on Wednesday, May 10. The upcoming dance movie is slated to premiere on the streaming site at 3 a.m. ET. Drama series starring Roderick Kabanga, Samuel Kujala and Jeanerick Muyima among others, creator and producer Max/Mahsa Malka. According to the OTT giant, the Finnish series is about two dancer brothers who intend to start a dance club.
According to the summary posted by the streamer:
“Over time, their artistic motivations come into conflict with their new work and what it takes to succeed.” Their brotherly friendship becomes increasingly strained as they strive to find the perfect balance between staying active and achieving their aspirations.”
Dance Brothers was written by Malka, Reeta Ruotsalainen and Leo Viirret and described by Netflix as “inspirational, bittersweet and heartfelt”. Future performances will be directed by Taito Kawata. In addition to the above actors, the film’s cast includes Cristal Snow, Oksana Lommi, Lauri Lohi, Fanni Noroila, Josefiina Kotajärvi, Andrew Taua’i and Pietari Kauppinen.
Dance Brothers will showcase “Finland’s best creations”, according to the founder.
Dance Brothers is apparently the first Finnish series to have a global premiere on a streaming service. According to Variety, the unreleased series was filmed in the Finnish capital Helsinki last March. Endemol Shine The first Finnish scripted production to present itself as a youth drama.
Malka describes it as a “special project”, telling the publication:
“(Dance Brothers is) a blend of high-quality drama, vibrant dance, and a diverse cast.” This is not only a unique and revolutionary perspective on the dance genre but also an exceptional work… We have set up a series of films that will highlight the best of Finnish creativity in every level.”
According to The Futon Critic, the first season of the series is planned to consist of ten episodes and will air from 3:01 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. EST. However, it’s unclear if all the episodes will be available at the same time. Dance Brothers will also air on YLE, Finland’s state broadcaster, along with Netflix. Endemol Shine Finland’s head of scripting, Malka, is also an executive producer, along with the company’s MD, Unne Sormunen.
When asked about the project, Lars Blomgren, Banijay’s head of narration, told Variety:
“It’s an ambitious show with a unique story, so finding the right partners was key, and Max Malka has succeeded because of her stellar track record.”
It’s worth noting that even though the new Netflix series is a dance movie, the music department has some new faces. Elja Markkanen and Elias Salmenkallio, known for Into the Forest I Go (2017), were chosen to compose the music for Dance Brothers.
Not to mention Dance 100, the reality TV series Dance Monsters: A Dance Competition, the ballet Tiny Pretty Things, the teen dance show Baby Ballroom, Dancing Queen (2018 documentary film). about Alyssa Edwards aka Justin Dwayne Lee Johnson) and the five-episode series We Speak Dance, among many others.
