Dan Blocker was born on December 10, 1928 in De Kalb, Bowe County, Texas to Ora “Shack” Blocker and Mary Arizona Blocker. He was a Free Methodist who was raised in Texas. He went to the Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Dan played football for Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, which is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

In 1947, Dan enrolled at Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, Texas. He was a prominent football player there and graduated in 1950. After two years in the military administration, he enrolled in a master’s degree in dramatic arts.

From 1953 to 1958, Blocker taught high school English and drama in Sonora, Texas; after that, he was a sixth-grade teacher and mentor at Eddy Elementary School in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and a teacher in California. Before that, he worked as a rodeo entertainer and a nightclub bouncer as a stand-in. Blocker was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War.
