Dan Blocker was born on December 10, 1928 in De Kalb, Bowe County, Texas to Ora “Shack” Blocker and Mary Arizona Blocker. He was a Free Methodist who was raised in Texas. He went to the Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Dan played football for Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, which is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.
In 1947, Dan enrolled at Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, Texas. He was a prominent football player there and graduated in 1950. After two years in the military administration, he enrolled in a master’s degree in dramatic arts.

Career
From 1953 to 1958, Blocker taught high school English and drama in Sonora, Texas; after that, he was a sixth-grade teacher and mentor at Eddy Elementary School in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and a teacher in California. Before that, he worked as a rodeo entertainer and a nightclub bouncer as a stand-in. Blocker was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. He received his basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Actor Blocker played the role of Goon in Outer Space Jitters.
Blocker played Cloudy Sims, a whiskery poker-playing rodeo entertainer, in the 1958 scene “Rodeo” about Richard Diamond, a private detective, where a rodeo entertainer named Ed Murdock, played by Lee Van Cleef, is killed before he can execute his final execution at the annual event in Madison Square Garden. Blocker played Eric “Hoss” Cartwright on the television series Bonanza in 1959. He appeared in 415 episodes of the series before his death. In 1963, Blocker starred with Frank Sinatra in the parody Come Blow Your Horn. In 1968, he teamed up with Sinatra again in Lady in Cement, playing a menacingly focused character.
Blocker appeared in the 1970 film Cockeyed Cowboys of Calico Country. Additionally, he appeared on The Flip Wilson, a comedy program. While directing scenes for Bonanza, boss Robert Altman meets Blocker. He cast Blocker in the role of Roger Wade in The Long Goodbye, but Blocker died before filming began. Sterling Hayden was then cast and Blocker directed the film. Similarly, in 1963, Blocker started and received half ownership in the profitable Bonanza Steakhouse restaurant chain in exchange for acting as their business agent and making appearances at the establishment.

Blocker died at the age of 43 on May 13, 1972 in Los Angeles of a pulmonary embolism following nerve bladder surgery. Blocker’s remains were interred in the family plot at the Woodmen Cemetery in De Kalb, Texas. The basic burial is distinguished by a simple stone with the inscription “B. Dan D. Blocker”; three relatives, father, mother and sister, were buried next to him.
