Clarence Carter’s professional music career began with his friend Calvin Scott. They sang for the Fairlane label to release “I Wanna Dance But I Don’t Know How”, as Clarence & Calvin.
The pair joined Duke Records after the 1962 release of I Don’t Know. They therefore renamed themselves C & C Boys and released four singles for the label.
The duo recorded “Step by Step” at Rick Hall’s FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, in 1965. It was therefore released on the Atco label, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, but it also did not chart.
