From 1975 to 1977, she worked as the publication’s chief correspondent.
She then abruptly moved to rival Toronto Star, where she covered crime cases from 1978 as a reporter from 1977 to 1982. In an attempt to transition from news writer to editor. intern, she proposed a light-hearted article to the Toronto Sun in 1982. Being paid less than at the Star, Sun took the job. After Paul Rimstead’s death in 1987, her article was moved from entertainment to column space featured on Page 5. After 16 years at Sun, where she covered high-profile cases. As famous as that of Paul Bernard and Karla Homolka, Blatchford returned to reporting and harder news in the late 1990s.
Career
Blatchford was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2019 after her 2019 federal election campaign recording work was interrupted due to chronic muscle pain. By the time the disease was discovered, it had spread to the hips and spine. Blatchford was inducted into the Canada News Hall of Fame the following month, but was unable to attend the event.
She took a break from blogging to attend treatment at the Princess Margaret Cancer Institute, where she underwent months of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. She died in Toronto on February 12, 2020.
