According to Chris, after a fight with Shannon over the separation, he strangled her at his home in Frederick. After murdering Shannon, he dragged her body down the stairs when Bella saw him. According to Chris, Bella cried,
What is mom’s problem?”
Then he put Shannon on the floorboard and Bella and Cece in the back seat of his work truck. He took them in about 45 minutes to an oil site that was property of Anadarko Petroleum, where he worked. When he got there, Chris used a blanket to suffocate Cece and threw her into an oil tank. He returned and did the same to Bela. According to Chris, before Bella died, he asked her,
Is something like Sis going to happen to me?”
After throwing both of his daughters into the oil tanks, he buried his wife in a shallow grave nearby.
Chris’s disappearance and arrest report
Shannon’s former friend and co-worker Nicole Utoft Atkinson drove her home from the airport on the morning of August 13, 2018.
Later that day, Nicole began to worry because Shannon had missed her business meeting, her OB-GYN appointment, and Shannon had not responded to her texts. Nicole went to Shannon’s house at 12:10 pm, where no one answered the doorbell. Nicole contacted Chris, who had gone to work, and later called the Frederick Police Department. At around 1:40 pm an officer arrived at his home for a welfare check. Chris also arrived and gave permission for the police to search his house. During a welfare check, Shannon and her daughters were missing. Searchers later found Shannon’s purse containing her phone and keys, her car in the garage, and her wedding ring, which was found on the couple’s bed. The following day, the FBI and Colorado Bureau of Investigation joined the investigation. Initially, Chris told police that he did not know where his two daughters and wife were, and that he had not seen his wife since he left for work at 5:15 am on the 13th. He gave interviews to several media outlets in which he was seen pleading for the safe return of his wife and daughters. In an interview Chris said,
Shannon, Bella, Celeste, if you’re out there, come back. If anyone has it, bring it back. I want to meet everyone.”
He was arrested on 15 August 2018.
According to the arrest affidavit, Chris failed a polygraph test and confessed to killing Shannon. Before confessing, he asked investigators to speak to his father.
During the investigation, he claimed that he killed his wife in a fit of rage after she killed his daughters in response to a divorce request. He said he strangled Shannon and took all three bodies to a remote oil rig.
He was fired from his job on the day of his arrest. Authorities found the bodies on August 16. Later, in an interview with the police, he confessed to his crimes of murdering his pregnant wife and daughters. After Chris was arrested for his wife’s murder, his mistress, Nicole Kessinger, went to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and told them that she believed Chris was going to divorce his wife. He said,
Chris often paid for dates with gift cards – possibly so his wife couldn’t keep track of his spending. He always paid from them. Always. But on the night of August 11, something changed during their last date. Instead of paying with his usual gift card, Watts paid with a personal credit card. It seemed as if he had nothing to hide. Or nothing to lose”
