News about Charlie Tan
In an unusual move, a Cornell University alumnus wrote a letter to a federal judge outlining his motives for killing his father.
After a jury could not agree on a verdict in his father’s death in 2015, a judge ruled that there was not enough evidence for another trial, saving Pittsford resident Charles Tan, 23, from being convicted of state murder. However, Tan was still found guilty in federal court of purchasing a weapon used to commit the murder. Tan struggled to get his sentence reduced from 20 years in prison.
Tan responded to Senior US Judge Frederick Scullin in a five-page letter filed in court on Friday.
Tan’s letter opens with the words: “I feel that these three questions will allow me to express myself most effectively.” “How did you get into this situation? What knowledge did you gain? If given the opportunity, how would you react if/when?”
In the letter, Tan expressed regret for not seeking help before killing his father. He says his biggest feeling is fear that his father will kill his mother.
Tan wrote, “When I told him he couldn’t lay his hands on her, he was irritated.” He warned me to keep quiet and threatened to kill her if she offended him again.
Looking back on those days, it’s clear that Tan ran with only 30% understanding of the situation. My mother used to warn me that she would be killed, and all I knew was that she looked very defeated. I believe I have to defend her because there is no other way.
Tan admitted that his mother was really heartbroken because his father was murdered. Tan added: “She sacrificed 20 years of her life to ensure that I had the best opportunity every step of the way, and I missed it.” I know that it annoys her the most. Tan claims his path forward is clear: helping other teenagers avoid the mistakes he’s made. All I needed, he said, was the chance to do it.
