Chandrabose is an Indian lyricist and playback singer who predominantly works in Telugu films. She achieved international stardom for the song “Naatu Naatu” from the Telugu period action film RRR (2022), for which she won a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award in 2023.

Kanukuntla Subhash Chandrabose was born on Sunday, 10 May 1970 (age 53 years; as of 2023) in Challagariga, Warangal district, Telangana (now Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, Telangana). Their zodiac sign is Taurus. There was a Shiva temple and a library near his house in Challagariga. Chandrabose spent his childhood listening to devotional songs, which started playing at 4 in the morning every day. He also used to listen to radio. Soon, he memorized the songs and would often sing along with them. He was an avid reader and would go to the library after school and browse various books. He grew up listening to folk music and started writing songs at the age of 11. Talking about his childhood in an interview, he said,

I grew up in a village in Warangal district surrounded by folk music as well as Bhagavatam and Annamayya creations of Potana. At that time I was a big reader of children’s magazines, which expanded my imagination. I have derived my understanding of music from oral traditions like Hari Katha, Bura Katha, Yakshagana and Chindu Bhagavatam. I will write, sing and make it better.”

He did Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from JN Government Polytechnic Ramnathpur, Hyderabad. Subsequently, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad to obtain a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree in the same subject. He entered the industry aspiring to become a playback singer. While studying engineering, he tried to work as a singer for Doordarshan channel, but he was unsuccessful. Subsequently, his friend Srinathanna suggested him to focus on writing instead of singing.

His father, Narsaiah, worked as a primary school teacher. He is the youngest of four siblings, two brothers, Rajendra and Koti, and a sister, Swarupa. His mother, Kankuntala Madhunamma, worked as a laborer in the fields because it was difficult to support the household on her father’s salary; He died of a heart attack in 2019.

On 7 March 1999, Chandrabose married Suchitra, a choreographer from the Telugu film industry, in Bhadrachalam, Andhra Pradesh. Both of them first met in 1998 on a flight from Chennai to Hyderabad. Initially, they faced difficulty in convincing their parents for marriage as Suchitra is elder to Chandrabose and they belong to different castes. While Suchitra is from a Brahmin family, Chandrabose is from a backward class family. Together, they have two children, a son, Nanda Vanamali, and a daughter, Amrita.

Chandrabose has created a record in the Telugu film industry by writing more than 3600 songs in more than 850 films during his career spanning over 25 years. She entered the Telugu film industry with Muppalaneni Siva’s film Taj Mahal (1995). The first song he wrote for the film was Manchu Kondalona Chandram with the assistance of MM Sreelekha. This song was highly appreciated, establishing Chandrabose’s name in the industry. He wrote three crowd-pulling songs in 2001, Chai Chatukkuna for Mrigaraju Tagara Bhai, Ivaremi Anukunna for Budget Padmanabham, and Ekkado Putti Ekkado Perigi for Student No. 1. Ekado Putti Ekado Perigee featuring NTR Jr brought him into limelight. He worked with AR Rahman on the popular Telugu song Pedve Paalikina from Nani (2004).

Her notable works include Mounamagne Edagamani from Autograph (2004), Namaste Namaste Neeku Namaste from Samba (2004), Panchadhara Bomma Bomma from Magadheera (2009) and Kani Penchina Maa Ammeke from Manam (2014). In 2018, he gained popularity for Rangasthalam, the soundtrack of the 2018 Telugu film of the same name. Some of the hit songs from the soundtrack were Jigelu Rani, Entha Sakkagunnave and Ee Sethithon. He wrote the popular songs Ooh Antwa and Srivalli for the film Pushpa – The Rise (2021).

In January 2023, Natu Natu won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Natu Natu won the award, beating nominees Carolina by Taylor Swift, Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga, Bloodpop and Lift Me Up by Benjamin Rice and Thames, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler and Ludwig Goransson. On March 12, 2023, Natu Natu won the Oscar by defeating many heavy competitors like Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, Rihanna’s Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, This Is a Life from Everything, etc. Applause from Everywhere All at Once, and Tell It Like a Woman.
