Allan Gyngell News
Allan Gyngell AO, a leading authority on Australian foreign policy, passed away following a brief illness. Most recently, Mr. Gyngell held the position of National President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) from 2017 to 2022, during which time he made significant contributions to expanding the organization’s visibility and reach.
His keen intellect, polite demeanour, and remarkable understanding of world politics gave the AIIA and all other institutions with which he was affiliated enormous credibility.
Mr. Gyngell served as a director of China Matters as well as an honorary professor at the College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University. Additionally, he held the positions of Adjunct Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy and Director of the Crawford Australian Leadership Forum.
Mr. Gyngell was the cousin of David Gyngell, the former president of the Nine Network, and the brother of comedian Kym Gyngell. He graduated as a member of the “Class of 69” of the foreign service, among notable individuals Dennis Richardson, Ric Smith, and Sandy Hollway.
Mr. Gyngell possessed extensive knowledge of international analysis and politics. His initial assignment was in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar). The UK’s withdrawal of all of its soldiers “east of the Suez Canal” was followed by a deployment to Singapore where he witnessed the impact on the larger Indo-Pacific area. Then, he was assigned to Washington, DC.
He was assigned to Canberra in 1974, when he assisted in establishing Australia as the ASEAN’s first official dialogue partner and went to the inaugural meeting in Indonesia. He was appointed to lead the Foreign Affairs Branch of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in 1989, and from 1993 to 1996 he served as Prime Minister Paul Keating’s top foreign policy advisor.
Prior to being named Director-General of the Australian Office of National Assessments (ONA) from 2009 to 2013, he served as the institute’s founding Executive Director of the Lowy Institute for International Policy from 2003 to 2009. Since then, the Office of National Intelligence has absorbed the ONA.
Long after his employment at the Lowy Institute, Mr. Gyngell continued to speak there on a regular basis. In 2009, he was named an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for his contributions to international relations. Mr. Gyngell was a prolific author and contributor of assessment papers and analyses. “Sadly, we have lost a great Australian,” stated AIIA President Heather Smith in a statement issued today.
