Champai Soren is an Indian politician who was selected to become the 7th Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2024 following the arrest of previous Chief Minister Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate. He is from Jharkhand Mukti Morcha party and represents Seraikela constituency in Jharkhand Assembly.

Champai Soren was born on Thursday, 1 November 1956 (age 67 years; as in 2023) in Jilingagora village, Seraikela, Jharkhand. Their zodiac sign is Scorpio. He studied till 10th class in Ramakrishna Mission English School, Bistupur, Jamshedpur, BSEB Patna in 1974. When he was young, he worked on the fields with his father.

For over 30 years since 1991, he has served as the MLA of Serikella Assembly constituency and is recognized for his deep loyalty to JMM leader Shibu Soren.
In 1991, he stood as an independent candidate in a by-election and won, defeating the wife of influential JMM MP Krishna Mardi. In 1995, he won the assembly elections on JMM ticket. In 2000, he lost the assembly elections to BJP’s Anantram Tudu. From 2005 to 2009, he was elected as a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from Seraikela constituency. In 2009, he was elected to the 3rd Jharkhand Assembly and served until 2014. During his tenure, on 11 September 2010, he served as cabinet minister. Minister of Science and Technology, Labor and Housing until 18 January 2013. He was also selected as the Cabinet Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, Transport on 13 July 2013 and served till 28 December 2014. From 2014 to 2019, he was elected. Fourth Jharkhand Assembly. Between 29 December 2019 and 31 January 2024, he served as the Cabinet Minister of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Welfare in the Government of Jharkhand.
Chief Minister of Jharkhand
In 2024, he was elected as the Chief Minister (designate) of Jharkhand after the resignation of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Hemant resigned as Chief Minister of Jharkhand on 31 January 2024, following a visit by Enforcement Directorate officials who questioned him at his Ranchi home in connection with the land fraud case. That evening, around 8:30 pm, Soren visited Raj Bhavan, met Governor CP Radhakrishnan and ED officials and submitted his resignation. Hemant was arrested for ignoring ED summons for questioning regarding suspected money laundering probe. He was first interrogated in November 2021 regarding illegal mining. Then, he was questioned again on January 20 and 31, 2023, in connection with money received from illegal land transactions in Ranchi.
Champai was selected as the 7th Chief Minister-designate of Jharkhand on 31 January 2024. He took oath as Chief Minister on 2 February 2024.
JMM leader and MP Mahua Maji claimed that Hemant has been taken into custody by the ED and said in a statement,
CM is in ED custody. The CM has gone to the Governor with the ED team to submit his resignation… Champai Soren will be the new Chief Minister… We have sufficient numbers.
People were speculating that Hemant Soren would choose his wife for this post. However, after his party and Congress leaders talked it out, they agreed to elect Champai as the leader.

- Champhai is also known as Jharkhand Tiger and Kolhan Tiger.
- He played an important role in the division of Bihar and Jharkhand and was instrumental in delineating the new boundaries.
- In January 2023, he was taken to a hospital in Chennai from Sonari Aerodrome in a special plane. He was admitted to Tata Main Hospital on January 14 due to increased blood sugar levels. When his condition showed no signs of improvement, doctors at Tata Main Hospital decided to transfer him to DMS, Chennai for further treatment.
