Carolyn Donham Bryant News

The Calcasieu Parish coroner’s office verified to CNN that Carolyn Bryant Donham, a White lady whose accusation resulted in the 1955 lynching of Black youngster Emmett Till in Mississippi and whose role in the horrible death was recently reviewed by a grand jury, passed away in Louisiana.

88-year-old Donham passed away on Tuesday in Westlake, according to a coroner’s fact of death letter. In a statement released on Thursday, Malik Shabazz of Black Lawyers for Justice claimed that Donham’s legacy “will be one of dishonesty and injustice.”

“The passing of Carolyn Bryant closes a difficult chapter for the Emmett Till family and for Black people in America. The statement reads: “The tragic aspect of Bryant’s death was that she was never made to answer for her part in the death of young Emmett Till, who became the martyr for the Civil Rights Movement.

Emmett, then 14 years old, was beaten and murdered in August 1955 after he is said to have whistled at Bryant, who is now Donham, in Money.

Later, Emmett was taken from his bed by her husband Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, who also battered him before forcing him into the back of a pickup truck, where he was shot in the head and had his body thrown into the Tallahatchie River. An all-White jury found them both not guilty of murder when Carolyn Bryant testified that Emmett grabbed her and threatened her verbally throughout the trial.

In a 1956 interview with Look magazine, Milam, who passed away in 1980, and Bryant, who passed away in 1994, both acknowledged to the murder. In 2007, a grand jury in Mississippi decided not to prosecute Donham with anything.

In 1955, Donham stated that Emmett grabbed her hand and waist and made advances while claiming to have had relationships with “White women before.” However, Timothy Tyson claimed that when he brought up that trial testimony in a 2008 encounter with Donham, she informed him, “That part’s not true.”

After Donham’s passing, Tyson released the following statement: “68 years ago, a 14-year-old Black boy from Chicago named Emmett Till was brutally murdered. America has found solace in the realisation that she is one of the monsters in this tale. However, the American social order’s silence on Emmett Till or the thousands of others like him was truly awful.
