Captain Shiva Chauhan is an Indian Army officer of the XIV Corps, Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army. On 2 January 2023, she became the first woman officer to be posted at Kumar Post on the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield.

Captain Shiva Chauhan was born in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He did his schooling from a school in Udaipur. Shiva lost his father at the age of 11. After his father’s death, his mother bore the expenses of his education. Shiva has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Techno India NJR Institute of Technology, Udaipur. Chauhan aspired to join the Indian Armed Forces since childhood. In March 2020, Chauhan secured All India Rank #1 in the Services Selection Board Interview at Allahabad. Later, he was recommended by 19SSB Allahabad for admission to SSC-Tech 25 (Army). Shiva trained at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai. After his training, Shiva Chauhan was commissioned into the Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army.

In May 2021, Shiva was commissioned into the Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army as a Lieutenant. Later, he was promoted to the rank of Captain through field ranking. In July 2022, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Shiva Chauhan successfully led the Sura Soi Cycling Expedition covering a distance of 508 km from Siachen War Memorial to Kargil War Memorial. Subsequently, he accepted the challenge of leading the troops of Sura Soi Engineer Regiment in the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield. In the same year, Shiva was selected to undergo training at the Siachen Battle School based on his exceptionally good performance.

After her selection, Shiva was assigned to the Fire and Fury Corps of the Northern Command of the Indian Army, and she proceeded to the Siachen Battle School, where she underwent rigorous training with officers and men of the Indian Army.

Training included ice wall climbing, endurance training, avalanche and crevasse rescue, and survival drills.

After a month of rigorous training, Shiv Chauhan was commissioned as a Kumar in the Siachen Glacier to lead a team of sappers for a period of three months; The team was given the responsibility of several combat engineering tasks. Siachen Glacier, located in the Karakoram range of the Himalayas and situated at an altitude of approximately 15,600 feet, is known as the highest militarized area in the world.

Celebrating Shiva’s achievement, the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps tweeted,

Breaking the glass ceiling. Captain Shiva Chauhan of Fire and Fury Sappers, after completing rigorous training, became the first woman officer to be posted at Kumar Post in Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield.

Describing his achievement as ‘an encouraging sign’, India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Captain Chauhan on Twitter. He tweeted,

excellent news! I am extremely happy to see that more women are joining the armed forces and facing every challenge boldly. This is an encouraging sign. My best wishes to Captain Shiva Chauhan.”
