Despite not having appeared in any of the three previous seasons of the Discovery Channel staple “Naked and Afraid,” Washington native Bulent Gurcan may have been somewhat prepared for “Naked and Afraid: Castaways” due to his hometown’s proximity to the U.S. mainland.

Gurcan resides in Point Roberts, Whatcom County, a 5-square-mile pene-exclave that is bordered by Boundary Bay on three sides and shares a land border with Canada. Point Roberts, which is 22 miles south of Vancouver’s city center, is home to about 1,200 people. It is a 25-mile trip through Canada to get to Blaine, which is cut off from the American continent.

Gurcan, who was born in Turkey and came to the United States at the age of 20, claims that if you’re not comfortable being by yourself, Point Roberts will chew you up and spit you out. “If there is an emergency, they will send a helicopter [from the United States] to pick you up. There is a clinic, a grocery store, a cafe, a bar, and a restaurant here.

Nine seasoned competitors are cast out into the Pacific Ocean in “Naked and Afraid: Castaways,” where they must swim to and live on a lonely island. They must scrounge the island for supplies because they lack a map and tools. They set out on their 21-day survival trip in groups of three, eventually making their way to an extraction spot to await rescue.

According to Gurcan, he only wanted to take part in “Naked and Afraid” again if it was something other than spending 30 days in the jungle after his prior expeditions, which were primarily spent alone in the African forest.

“They kept requesting that I return to take on further challenges. What would you like me to do, travel alone for 60 days? ” he asks. I, therefore, asserted that it must be a novel idea.

Gurcan served in the U.S. Army before earning a master’s in health and human performance and a bachelor’s in exercise science. In 2006, Gurcan accepted a position with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Texas. In 2008, he moved to Point Roberts inside CBP.

Regarding his first “Naked” season, he admits, “I pushed myself too much,” recalling that he hauled a 150-pound log for half a mile across the jungle floor. “I approached the [following seasons] with a lot more caution.”

Gurcan, a pilot who regularly flies from Point Roberts to Lynden, Whatcom County, says ‘Castaways’ gave him the opportunity to practice controlled emergency airplane landings in the real world.

“What happens after landing? You must continue to survive after the crash, he argues. “I mentally prepare for it, but there is no real-world training for that event. As realistic and effective a training tool as it gets is the concept of “Castaways.”

He quips that the biggest obstacle he encountered on “Castaways” was “sharks, sandflies, and millennials,” one of whom was another contestant.

Gurcan claims, “Gen Xers weren’t given anything; we have to make things happen. Because millennials received a lot of gifts, they have developed the habit of not preparing ahead or thinking forward.

Gurcan is also seen fighting what appears to be an armadillo in the clip.

“I can’t tell you who won, but I can tell you this: In the wild, it’s survival of the fittest,” he claims. “An animal will do everything it takes to survive, even bite, scratch, kick, and poke you. And they aren’t embarrassed about it.
