Popular adult beverage company Bud Light made a splash with a big announcement on February 1st. Before the Super Bowl, the company announced that controversial comedian Shane Gillis would be its new spokesperson.
The irony of the ad is that Gillis has a history of making racist and homophobic jokes, while last year, the company’s sales plummeted after it signed transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in an endorsement deal.
After the announcement, Twitter erupted with thoughts about the new employee. “I haven’t drank Bud Light before and probably still don’t), but hiring Shane Gillis has to be the best rebuttal Bud Light could have ever had,” one user said.
“I like Shane Gillis. I hope he makes a lot of cash. F outbreak light. If you can’t even hold a simple grudge that only requires you not to buy crappy beer from a crappy company, then you’re just crazy about everything,” added another.
“Bud Light has hired a sponsoring comedian, Shane Gillis, who was fired by SNL for ‘insensitive jokes.’ Thanks to Bud Light, this is a smart move and a direct repudiation of ‘girls’ with damn marketing,” said another.
“Anhueser-Busch hires another spokesperson, comedian Shane Gillis, to help keep its Titanic-like Bud Light from going down completely. Nothing has changed at AB except some spokespersons for sun loungers of this Titanic brand,” another user wrote.
Gillis found himself in trouble last year. During an appearance on “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast,” the comedian was heard using a racial slur toward Chinese people.
“Chinatown is fucking crazy. Let the damn ch–ks live there,” she said.
The leaked images occurred shortly after he was hired to be part of the Saturday night live cast. But amid the backlash, the hit TV show rescinded its offer.
“After speaking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not join SNL”the program stated in a statement. “We were not aware of his previous comments that emerged in recent days.”
“The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. “We regret not having seen these clips sooner and that our vetting process was not up to our standards.”
Gillis defends his comedy material
Comedians tend to go further. But there’s a fine line between telling a risqué joke and being overtly offensive. Following leaked images of his comments, the comedian issued a statement about his jokes.
In it, he admitted that he has many “flaws” but that he never intentionally tries to offend anyone. “I am a comedian who pushes boundaries. Sometimes I miss. If you look back at my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you will find a lot of bad mistakes,” Gillis wrote.
“I am happy to apologize to anyone who was truly offended by something I said. “My intention is never to hurt anyone, but I try to be the best comedian I can be, and sometimes that takes risks.”
