- Black Manta’s intelligence, resourcefulness, and determination make him a powerful DC character on par with Batman, but without the superpowers.
- Black Manta’s Black Trident Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom makes the villain a greater threat, but relying on it diminishes his natural intelligence and determination, diminishing the impact of his exploits.
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Black Manta’s innate skills should be highlighted, allowing him to undergo challenging tests and demonstrate his own skills, rather than relying solely on the Black Trident.
Black Manta’s power upgrade Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Strips away the main appeal of DC villains. Many DC villains have displayed a wide variety of superpowers and abilities on the big screen, from the alien nature of General Zod and Doomsday to the magical source of the Enchantress and Doctor Sivana. Few are as driven by pure rage as Black Manta, which makes their attempts to defeat heroes despite lacking special abilities all the more impressive.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Bring back Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Neptune Years after the King of Atlantis refused to save the villain’s father, the villain Black Manta seeks revenge on Aquaman. With the help of highly advanced underwater gear inspired by Atlantis technology, Black Manta successfully explores the depths of the ocean and obtains the mysterious Black Trident, a mysterious weapon that provides him with ancient source of dark power. But while the Black Trident makes Black Manta a more dangerous threat than he already is, the weapon also dilutes the essence of the character.
Aquaman villain Black Manta is the reverse of Batman
A large part of Batman’s appeal comes from his lack of superpowers. Bruce Wayne relied on his intelligence, resourcefulness, strategy and sheer force of will to become one of the world’s greatest heroes and earn himself the role of leader of the Justice League. Likewise, Black Manta has accomplished impressive villainous feats without the help of superpowers. He usually invades Aquaman’s kingdom alone, making his life a living hell, and then teams up with super-powered villains to fight other god-like heroes. Like Batman, Black Manta begins his journey with the promise of revenge for his father, which drives him to develop his intellect and push his body to its limits.
Batman and Black Manta have followed very different paths, with Batman using his skills to avenge Gotham and defend Earth, while Black Manta killed Aquaman’s son after vowing revenge on him. However, the main appeal of both characters is their unbreakable will, because when it’s clear there’s a vulnerable human being behind the mask, there’s more value behind every victory over a super-powered being. If Batman’s story is exciting because of his climb to the top, Black Manta’s emergence is also exciting because he subverts the typical villain dynamic, becoming the underdog opponent in the face of a near-invincible hero.
Giving Black Manta magical powers would destroy his best character traits
Black Manta’s Black Trident Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Might give him the strength he needs “Kill Aquaman and destroy everything he holds dear”, but this ultimately weakened his ingenuity and determination. Any other villain could pose the same threat to Aquaman and Atlantis with additional powerful abilities and magical weapons. If Black Manta wins, his victory may be due more to his newfound powers than to his own efforts. Black Manta may rely on the power of the Black Trident and expect it to do most of the work for him, rather than finding clever ways to overcome his limitations. Aquaman simply takes away the weapon to defeat him a second time.
