Crowd gathered at Astroworld Festival
On the night of 5 November 2021, Bharti Shahani became one of the victims of the Astroworld Festival Concertgoers Surge incident that took place at NRG Park, Houston, Texas. Astroworld Festival is a music festival organized every year by American rapper Travis Scott and was held on 5 and 6 November 2021. Scott and Drake’s joint stage performance during the show drove the audience into a frenzy which later turned into a mob. The incident when a crowd of 50,000 reached the stage. Reportedly, Bharti had gone to enjoy the concert with her younger sister Namrata Shahani and cousin Mohit Belani, but they lost contact with each other when the over-excited crowd moved towards the stage. A total of eight people died, 11 others suffered cardiac arrest and more than 300 were injured in the chaos. Mohit Belani told this incident to the media.
Once one person fell, people started falling like dominoes. It was like a sinkhole. People were falling on each other. There were layers of corpses on the ground, as if they were two people thick. We were struggling to breathe, to come out on top and survive.”
During the incident Bharti Shahani was buried under a pile of people and was deprived of oxygen for several minutes, resulting in her brain stem swelling by approximately 90%. He was immediately taken by ambulance to Houston Methodist Hospital and was given CPR on the way. According to doctors at Houston Methodist Hospital, he suffered multiple heart attacks on the way to the hospital. Bharti, who was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital since 5 November 2021, was declared brain dead by a team of doctors on 10 November 2021. While talking to the media, his father told that the doctors had already told him that his chances of survival were almost negligible. Sunny Shahani said,
Doctors say the chances of survival are next to nothing, which I haven’t even talked to my wife about yet. We keep saying that we will pray. I ask all people of Houston to pray for him. “Maybe the prayers will work a miracle for him.”
Following the Astroworld Festival crowd surge incident, Bharti Shahani’s younger sister Namrata Shahani has launched a website named GoFundMe to raise funds to help cover the rising expenses of Bharti’s treatment. His goal is to raise over $50,000 with his fundraising website.
Houston City Mayor Sylvester Turner revealed in a press conference that he has ordered a high-level investigation into the devastating incident. He said,
This is a very active investigation, and we will likely be engaged for quite some time to find out exactly what happened. “This is now a criminal investigation that will involve our homicide division as well as narcotics and we will get to the bottom of this.”
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner claimed to have spoken with Travis Scott before the concert, expressing concern about the large crowd. Troy said in its official statement that,
I expressed my concerns regarding public safety and that in my 31 years of law enforcement experience I have never seen a time when citizens of all ages faced so many challenges, including a global pandemic and social tensions across the country. Was. I asked Travis Scott and his team to work with HPD for all events over the weekend and to be mindful of their social-media messaging on any unscheduled events.

Travis Scott also took to Twitter to express his sympathies to those affected by the crowd overcrowding incident at his concert. He posted,
I am absolutely devastated by what happened last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those affected by what happened at the Astroworld Festival. The Houston PD has my full support as they continue to address this tragic loss of life.”
