During the filming of the new supernatural drama beautiful creature, rant screen Visited a movie set in Louisiana to see a key scene being filmed. During that visit, we chatted with some of the stars of the new film about its subject matter and why it’s different from anything you’ve seen before.

Directed by Richard Lagravins, the film is based on the first book in a series of books by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stoll.freelance writer). Movies starring Alden Ehrenreich (ash), as the idealistic teenager Ethan Water. Early in the story, Watt begins to dream of a mysterious woman entering his life. When the young woman of his dreams, Lena Duchamp (Alice Englert), arrives in town, he becomes interested in her and quickly realizes that she possesses supernatural abilities that make her outcast by the local community. Ehrenreich, who starred in Tetro (2009), tells us why he liked this script:

my character. I thought for the first five pages, I wanted to make this movie, and it was because of my character…Richard [LaGravenese] I have a very deep knowledge and understanding of movies. I feel a lot of old movies growing up with me. I think Ethan was a character from some old movie. I love people like Jimmy Stewart, love to get out of here and fight for it [attitude] – that’s the element of it, and that’s definitely why I wanted to do it. I’ve just been through something like this, when you feel good, you understand — you know who this person is.

In the story, Watt ends up having a romantic relationship with Duchamp, despite being warned by the others. He meets her whole family and realizes that she will soon be captured by the forces of good (light) or evil (darkness). Lena’s aunt Del (Margot Martindale) wants Lena to shine while others, including Del’s mischievous daughter Ridley (Amy Rossum), want Lena to become an agent of the dark forces. On set, Martindale describes his character’s relationship with his wayward daughter:

She no longer appears in my world. She really went her own way…she visited and what a ‘god! What trouble will she cause? She is like a child who has gone the wrong way.

Of course, the movie isn’t just about supernatural events and a girl’s future. Sunset Throughout the series, several major events in the story speak to the growing pains and anxieties of adolescence that young people often face. Englert’s character is torn between family members and uncertain about her feelings for Watt, topics she knows all too well. Englert spoke to us about this conflict:

For a supernatural movie, I think it’s mostly about people. There are many things about people. We’ve talked about everything from first love to bodily functions, and what shows up in this story. I think every child grows up with the idea that what we give is our society. Education and parents – they tell you “that’s it,” but when you hit puberty, you wonder, “Is that so?” Why? Why is this happening? Sometimes this question leads to more results. Sometimes not. Sometimes, we just continue these cycles.

For those who thought the story sounded familiar and the movie tried to be a new one SunsetRosen explains why the film is so unique and why audiences should keep an eye on it when it hits theaters next spring:

I think this is special because – and I’m sure everyone says the same about their projects – but ours does because Richard has a vision… I just agree with that. and philippe rousselot [the director of photography], I mean they really made a world that looks different from any other out there. It’s not like Twilight, it’s not like The Hunger Games, it’s not like anything. It’s heavily based on the Southern Gothic world, but has a magical feel to it, and a nod to high fashion, but also to old paintings and things that he’s been painting that way. So I think his adjustment to the material is really complicated and in a way that will make it very different visually. Movies are a visual medium, so I think it will be fine.
