Baltimore Mayor Details Search and Rescue Efforts After Devastating Bridge Collapse

The mayor of Baltimore is speaking out about rescue efforts following the calamitous collapse of a bridge after being struck by a freighter. Rescuers are working to save people from the water after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday morning.

“This will be an ongoing search and rescue,” said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. Good morning america‘s Michael Strahan on the phone. “They will do that work to make sure we can save as many souls as possible.”

“There were people on this bridge when the tragedy occurred. “We have our fire teams, our marine teams, our police and marine teams out there,” Scott added.

“Now that the sunlight is coming out, we can put the drivers in the water to try to save souls. And that is where the attention is and will continue to be for quite some time.”

Scott described the challenge of the rescue operation due to the frigid waters of the Patapsco River. “We’re obviously dealing with the tide coming in, so it’s very windy. That is why we understand that this is not an easy operation for them,” he added.

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told reporters Tuesday morning that this was an ongoing search and rescue operation. The Coast Guard also helped.
