Baltimore bridge collapse survivor details seeing ship approaching in ‘remarkable conversation’

Hours after the devastating collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, a survivor details watching the freighter Dali approach the structure before impact.

While speaking with CNN’s Phil Mattingly, Maryland Governor Wes Moore claimed he had a “pretty remarkable conversation” with one of the survivors of the bridge collapse. The politician shared that the individual said it was “if it weren’t for the grace of God that he was there.”

“You know, he talked about the moments before and how physically close he came to being captured,” Moore explained. “Because when you saw the moments between the moment the crew called for help and the moments when the bridge actually collapsed, we’re talking about seconds.”

Governor Moore said he and Lt. Governor Aruna Miller had the opportunity to speak with the survivor of the Baltimore bridge collapse. “It’s really quite miraculous considering what happened,” Moore continued. “And the speed and intensity with which it happened last night.”

When Mattingly asked if, given the speed at which the freighter was traveling, bridge workers had had a chance to see it before impact. “The individual actually told me that he saw the boat,” Moore explained. “That was to come.”

Governor Moore further shared that “brave” workers regularly work in “challenging conditions” and see ships arrive “every night.”

“That was a normal routine,” Moore said. “But when you see the size, the enormity of that type of vessel, the speed of it, and even the slightest adjustments that you saw here mean the difference between a successful passage and a catastrophe. And unfortunately what we saw last night was a catastrophe.”

US Coast Guard declares six missing dead after Baltimore bridge collapse

Unfortunately, the United States Coast Guard announced Tuesday afternoon that, due to weather and water conditions, it had to assume that the six missing after the Baltimore bridge collapse had died.

U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath made the official announcement. “I would like to announce tonight that, based on the length of time we have been on this search, the extensive search efforts we have undertaken, the temperature of the water, at this time we do not believe that we will be able to find any of these individuals still alive.” .

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott further described the bridge collapse as an “unthinkable and unspeakable tragedy.”

The chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Jennifer Homendy, stated that search teams continue to verify the number of vehicles and people that were on the bridge during the collapse.

Authorities have declared the collapse an accident and that there is no suspicion of terrorism involved. Videos of the accident showed that the ship experienced some power problems just before impact.
