Early life
Robert John Bardo was born on January 2, 1970at Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA. He is currently 53 years. Bardo was the youngest of the seven children. Of the seven children, Bardo was the youngest. His father, Philip, was a non-commissioned officer in the United States Air Force. And his mother was Japanese.
Also, the family moved around a lot and in 1983 they finally landed in Tucson, Arizona. Bardo is said to have had a challenging upbringing. After threatening suicide, one of his brothers abused him and placed him in foster care. Bipolar disorder was identified in Bardo, who also had a history of mental illness in his family.
Additionally, he spent a month in a mental institution when he was 15 years old to deal with his emotional problems. In the ninth grade, Bardo left Pueblo Magnet High School and began working as a janitor at Jack in the Box. In addition, Bardo had been arrested three times in the 18 months prior to Schaeffer’s murder on suspicion of various crimes. Bardo’s neighbors also said that he had acted strangely and threateningly towards them for no reason.

Before focusing on Schaeffer, Bardo pursued Samantha Smith, a young peace activist who was killed in a plane crash in 1985. Bardo took the opportunity to walk on the set of the CBS television series My Sister Sam, in which Schaeffer had a lead role. after writing Schaeffer a series of letters.
Bardo met Schaeffer at her home on July 18, 1989. He was upset with her for participating in a sex scene in the film Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills. And he claimed that she had “lost her innocence” and had become “just another Hollywood whore.” He visited her in her apartment and expressed her admiration for her.
After Schaeffer turned him down, Bardo stopped at a restaurant for breakfast before returning to the apartment and ringing the doorbell once more an hour later. Bardo shot Schaeffer in the chest when he opened the door. In Tucson, Arizona, where he was seen wandering aimlessly in traffic, Bardo was arrested.

Marcia Clark served as the state’s attorney in the case; she later took the lead role in the OJ Simpson murder trial. Bardo resided in a Sensitive Needs Unit (SNU), which houses prisoners with special requirements, such as gang members, high-profile criminals and sex offenders. When Bardo killed Schaeffer, he had in his possession a crimson paperback edition of Catcher in the Rye, which he threw off the roof of a building as he left. He argued that it was just a coincidence and that he wasn’t trying to be like Mark David Chapman. She had a copy of the song with him on December 8, 1980, when he shot and killed John Lennon.

The United States Congress created the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act. And it prevents state Departments of Motor Vehicles from divulging the residence addresses of state residents. As a result of Bardo’s actions and his means to acquire Schaeffer’s address. After the murder, the first state anti-stalking laws in the country were passed, as California Penal Code 646.9. This case served as the inspiration for the Law & Order: Season 2 episode “Star Struck”.

On July 27, 2007, while on his way to breakfast, Bardo was stabbed 11 times in the maximum security wing of Mule Creek State Prison in Amador County, California. Two knives were found at the scene. According to authorities, he was treated at the UC Davis Medical Center before being sent back to prison. Another inmate serving between 82 and life in prison for second-degree murder was the suspect in the attack.
As of 2023, Bardo has been incarcerated at Avenal State Prison in Avenal, California, serving a life sentence.
