News Astrud Gilberto

Bossa nova icon Astrud Gilberto, known for her classic performance of “The Girl from Ipanema,” has died aged 83, according to her son Marcelo. Salvador, Bahia, is where Astrud Gilberto was born. During her career, which began in the 1960s, she produced an stellar catalog that included 16 studio albums and two live albums.

Gilberto and “Garota de Ipanema” (Girl from Ipanema) met by chance. The song was first written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vincius de Moraes in 1962, then covered in English as “The Girl from Ipanema” by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist Joo Gilberto on March 18, 1963.

According to A&R engineer Phil Ramone, Astrud Gilberto, who was in the control room during the recording, suggested singing on the track when the opportunity arose. She’s a surprising choice when it comes to lyrics translated by Norman Gimbel, despite not being a professional singer.

“Girl from Ipanema” became a worldwide phenomenon, selling more than five million copies worldwide and increasing the awareness of bossa nova music on a global scale. The song won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, while Gilbert’s vocals in it earned a nomination for Best Female Vocal Performance. However, Gilberto received only $120 in royalties for his work despite the song’s popularity.

Despite her widespread popularity, Astrud Gilberto believes her native Brazil has abandoned her. She was deeply influenced by the treatment of the Brazilian media, and in the end her people turned against her. She never performed in Brazil again after performing there in 1965.

Sofia, a singer and Gilbert’s niece, posted a heartfelt tribute to her grandmother on Instagram, noting how important she was in popularizing bossa nova. She highlights Astruda’s continued influence on the genre and calls her the face and global voice of bossa nova.

Colleagues and fans paid tribute to Gilberto, recognizing her great contributions to the Brazilian music scene and the many lives she touched during her career.
