Nearly 15 years after Brittany Murphy passed away suddenly, Clueless Star Breckin Meyer opens up about the late actress.
While appearing in Still here Hollywood On the podcast, Meyer told host Steve Kmetko that Murphy was one of the best people he knew.
“Britt passed away as an adult,” Breckin Meyer explained. “But she’s one of those people I always think about. She wishes she could see what she would have done now.”
Noting that Murphy was “very talented,” Meyer claimed that only the surface of her talents had been touched upon. “She was such a good singer, and seeing how many people were into music and film, I thought, ‘Oh, I would have loved to see Brittany do that.’”
Breckin Meyer starred Clueless as Travis Birkenstock, who turned out to be the love interest of Murphy’s Tai Frasier. Meyer recalled that auditioning for the role was easy as he and Murphy played boyfriend and girlfriend several times before appearing in the cult classic.
“And then Britt and I did King of the hill together for 8 years,” Meyer said. “And then I took on a role that she played, not when she passed away, but before that, like the character’s voice changed and I took over, but she was still Luanne in King of the hill.”
Breckin Meyer remembers being a few houses away from Brittany Murphy’s house when she died
While continuing to talk about Brittany Murphy, Breckin Meyer stated that the actress’ death hit him hard.
She also revealed that she was at the home of Ryan Phillippe, who lived five houses away from her on the day of his death. When they heard sirens heading toward her house, Meyer and Phillippe had no idea what was happening.
“When we all found out, it was terrible,” Breckin Meyer recalled. “Brittany was… she was a soda bottle; she was the sun. She was so bubbly and great and for her to pass away like that, in that way and in such a toxic relationship, was just terrible. Not only because he is your friend, but because others can no longer see.”
Brittany Murphy passed away on December 20, 2009, at the age of 32.
PEOPLE reports that the Los Angeles County coroner concluded that Murphy had died as a result of pneumonia combined with anemia and “multiple drug intoxication” both prescription and over-the-counter.
“She was very sick with pneumonia, very anemic and was taking medication,” the forensic assistant revealed. “And all of that combined killed her.”
It was confirmed that there were no illegal drugs in Murphy’s system at the time of his death. At the time she was living with her husband Simon Monjack and her mother Sharon.
Five months after Murphy’s death, Monjack was found dead at the age of 40. Suspiciously, it was ruled that his cause of death was the same as that of his wife, which was pneumonia and anemia.
