Almost 20 years after her SNL lip sync fiasco, Ashlee Simpson has opened up about the infamous event.
During his recent appearance at Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen On the podcast, Simpson addressed the incident by stating that he learned a lot from it and the reaction that followed.
Ashlee Simpson explained that what was difficult about the situation was that she wrote all of her songs and propelled her career forward, only to have it all fall apart due to the mistake on stage.
“It taught me humility, it taught me a lot about myself and my personal strength,” Simpson said. She also noted that the event taught her to get up and keep going. “So there’s something to that too.”
During her appearance as a musical guest on SNL, Simpson had already performed his single parts of me before performing his second song Autobiography. However, the wrong voices ended up playing and she danced a little before leaving the stage. She has been considered the only musician who came out of a SNL performance.
It was later revealed that Ashlee Simpson lost her voice completely due to an attack of acid reflux. She ended up having to lip-sync her songs to his songs. Simpson noted that her situation reminded him of the “power of saying no.”
“If I had that power to really have been like that, which I would have now or looking back, I would have said, ‘I won’t show up.’ Period,’” she said.
Ashlee Simpson Admits Her Second ‘SNL’ Performance Was ‘Very Scary’
While we continue chatting about her SNL experience, Ashlee Simpson recalled her second SNL performance, which occurred less than a year later.
“That was f–king scary,” Simpson admitted. She wrote her second album. I am me after the first SNL incident. “He came out at No. 1, so I thought, ‘I’ll be fine.’”
She later said that having her reality show at the time also helped her get through the situation. “All the people who were my fans stayed with me and I went back on stage and went back to everything. But I think having to find, at a young age, that strength to say, ‘No, I’m good at this.’ I’ll move on. I will keep on fighting'”.
Ashlee Simpson went on to add that the SNL The event was the most humiliating experience of his life. “Because the whole world thinks that everything you put your heart and soul into writing is a joke. And that sucked.”
