Ashish Kumar Choudhary is an Indian boxer who competes in the 75 kg weight category. He is one of the nine Indian boxers to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Ashish Kumar was born on Monday, 18 July 1994 (age 27 years; as in 2021) in Dhahotu, Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Cancer.

Born in a family of sportspersons, Ashish became interested in sports at an early age. His brothers and cousin inspired him to take up boxing. Talking about choosing boxing as his career in an interview, Kumar said,

One of my brothers was into boxing and one into wrestling. Seeing him inspired me in my childhood and my family supported me. My father was already a national Kabaddi player at that time. From the moment I stepped in, he advised me on what was required to succeed at the highest level and groomed me accordingly.”

he adds,

Wrestling and boxing were my options at that time. I tried wrestling but soon lost interest in it. My interest moved towards boxing.”

Ashish joined Sundernagar Boxing Academy, Himachal Pradesh at the age of just 14. When he turned 16, he moved to Bhiwani to focus seriously on his training.

Ashish Kumar started his boxing career in 2009 at a junior state competition and won a gold medal in it. Subsequently, he participated in the School Nationals and won a bronze medal. In 2012, he competed at the Youth Nationals and Senior Nationals. In 2015, he participated in the 35th National Games held in Kerala and won the gold medal. Ashish made his international debut in 2018 by participating in the India Open International Boxing Championship. He reached the quarterfinals of the event.

    My father died on February 7, just a month before my Olympic qualifying match. The match was on 8 March. It was important for me to fulfill my father’s dream. He wanted to see me in the Olympics and later win a medal there. Now, I have taken my first step.”

  • Ashish participated in the 35th Boxam International Tournament in Castellón, Spain in 2020. However, he tested positive for the virus during the tournament, resulting in his withdrawal from the final. Not just Ashish, his roommates Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg) and Sumit Sangwan (81kg) were also disqualified from the tournament. All three finished the competition with silver medals.
