Arun Govil is an Indian actor, producer, director and politician. He is best known for playing the role of ‘Lord Ram’ in Ramanand Sagar’s ancient Hindu epic television series, Ramayana (1987–1988).

Arun Govil was born on Sunday, 12 January 1958 (age 64 years; as in 2022) in Ramnagar, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Their zodiac sign is Capricorn. He received the B.Sc. degree from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. He used to participate in school annual functions and even played various roles in college plays. Till then, he was away from the idea of taking up acting as a profession. After completing his formal education, he moved to Mumbai to help his brother in his business, where his desire to do something of his own later paved his way into the acting field.

Arun Govil’s father, Chandra Prakash Govil, was a government water works engineer in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Arun’s father had 8 children (6 sons and 2 daughters). One of his elder brothers, Vijay Govil, married former Indian actress and Doordarshan’s longest running “Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan” talk show host Tabassum.

Arun is married to former designer and film actress Sreelekha Govil.
Early in his acting career he met Sreelekha, who was a textile designer at that time. He credits her to a great extent for his success and achievements.
They both have two children, Amal Govil (son) and Sonika Govil (daughter).
His son works as a banker in Mumbai, while his daughter Sonika Govil lives in Boston, USA, where she is studying at Hult International Business School.

After coming to Mumbai at an early age, the monotony of his brother’s business and his desire to carve out his own identity inspired him to try his hand at acting. It took him about two years to get his first break, but he was eventually cast in the film Paheli (1977), in which he played a supporting actor. Paheli’s production company, Rajshri Productions was extremely impressed with his work and hence, they later signed him as a lead actor for three more films, which were Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979), Radha Aur Sita (1979), To Sanch. No Flame (1979).
One of the three films, “Sawan Ko Aane Do”, was a mega-hit of its time, and its music is still loved by a large section of the Indian listeners.
He acted in Kanak Mishra’s film Jio To Aise Jio (1981) which was the 30th biggest hit of that year. His acting career progressed and after that he worked in many other Hindi films. He made his small screen debut in Ramanand Sagar’s widely acclaimed television series “Vikram Aur Betal” (1988), in which he played the role of the legendary King Vikramaditya.
Meanwhile, he was selected for the role of “Lord Ram” in Ramanand Sagar’s “Ramayana” (1987–88), the world’s most watched mythological series.
This proved to be a milestone in his career. He rose to stardom and was awarded the Uptron Award for “Best Actor in a Lead Role” in 1989 for his work in Ramayana. Playing the role of Lord Ram with such calmness gave him a great experience; Subsequently, he was offered several spiritual-based roles including King Harishchandra in Vishwamitra (TV series) and Lord Buddha in the TV series “Buddha”. He got caught in an image trap and people started considering him a symbol of virtue, Bollywood producers stopped giving him typical roles. He has worked in Telugu, Bhojpuri, Bengali and Oriya films, including Bidhira Bidhaan (1989- Oriya), Edu Kondalaswami (1991- Telugu), Govinda Govinda (1993- Telugu) Pyaari Dulhania (1989- Bhojpuri) and many other films. Politics
On 18 March 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of assembly elections in four states and one union territory. While talking to the media, Mr. Govil explained the reason behind joining BJP and said,
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s irritation with Jai Shri Ram was the trigger point for me to join the BJP. And there is nothing wrong in saying Jai Shri Ram…it is not a slogan, not even a political slogan. It is a way of life for us, it represents our culture and ethos.”

- Arun’s father Chandra Prakash Govil wanted him to become a government officer, while Arun wanted to make his mark by doing something different.
- Arun was not the first choice to play the role of Lord Rama in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana, he faced complete rejection after his audition, but then eventually, the production team reached a general agreement to cast him; Because they couldn’t find a better actor for that particular role.

That became the biggest negative point in my career, and I realized that I could never return to showbiz the way I wanted to. I did a few TV shows, but whenever I did something, people dismissed me saying, ‘Hey, what is Ramji doing?’
- In March 2020, amid the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, a picture went viral on social media in which he was reliving old memories with his family by watching Ramayan on Doordarshan. Nearly 32 years after its original telecast in the late 80s, Ramayan was re-telecasted on Doordarshan.
