In a horrific incident that took place in Dumka, Jharkhand, a 17-year-old girl named Ankita Kumari Singh was set on fire by her stalker Shahrukh Hussain and his friend Naeem Ansari alias Chhotu Khan on August 23, 2022. The girl later died. His burn injuries on 28 August 2022.

According to Ankita Kumari’s father Sanjeev Singh, Ankita’s neighbor Sharukh Hussain had been stalking her for more than a year. Reportedly, Sharukh Hussain used to follow her while going to school and was pressurizing her to have a romantic relationship with him. Later, a night before the attack, when Ankita Kumari scolds Sharukh for harassing her, he threatens her with dire consequences. Ankita immediately informed this to her father; However, since it was already late at night, his father advised him to sleep and said that he would talk about it in the morning. According to Ankita Kumari’s dying declaration, at around 4 am on August 23, 2022, when she was sleeping in her room, Sharukh Hussain, along with his friend Chhotu Khan, threw petrol on her from the window of the room and set her on fire. Put it on. When she woke up, her body was on fire and she ran to her family members who tried to extinguish the fire. Ankita Kumari said in her last statement,
I had informed my father about Shahrukh’s threats the evening before. The next day at around 4 am, he along with his friend poured petrol through the window of my room. I felt a tingling sensation on my back and smelled burning. When I opened my eyes I saw Shahrukh and his friend Chhotu running away.
He was admitted to Phulo Jhano Medical College, Dumka. Later, he was referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, where he died on 28 August 2022. In an interview with a media source, Ankita Kumari’s father talked about the incident and said,
I told him that it was too late and I would go to Shahrukh’s house the next day and first talk to his mother. But that day never came. I will always live with the regret that I could not save him.”

Soon after news of the victim’s murder emerged, some reports claimed that her body had suffered 90 percent burns. Ankita’s father’s close friend Pankaj Sharma was present in the hospital in Ranchi at the time of Ankita’s death. In an interview he talked about Ankita Kumari’s condition in the hospital and said,
She was talking to us. She was fine till around 12:30 am on 28th August. At around 1:15 in the night he started feeling uneasy. I went to the ICU to call the shift doctor who was sitting there. But he came 45 minutes late.”
Last statement of the victim
In her dying declaration before the magistrate, Ankita said that she wanted the culprit to be given death penalty. Furthermore, she said that she wanted the accused to meet the same fate as she had.
Arrest of accused and speedy trial
Immediately after the horrific incident of murder of Ankita Kumari, the accused in this case, Sharukh Hussain, was arrested by Dumka police. Later on August 30, 2022, Sharukh’s friend and the second accused in the case, Naeem Ansari alias Chhotu Khan, was arrested by Jharkhand Police. Speaking to the media, Dumka Superintendent of Police Amber Lakra said,
Accused Shahrukh has been arrested. We will apply to fast track court for speedy trial. People are supporting us. We appeal to the people to maintain peace. The situation is under control and Section 144 has been imposed.”

In a media interview, Ankita’s father Sanjeev Singh revealed that Muslim stalker Sharukh Hussain used to stalk him and pressure him to convert to Islam. He said,
For months he kept pressurizing my daughter to marry and convert to religion. He was a one-sided lover, a stalker.”
Sanjeev Singh told that Sharukh got his number from someone and started calling him. Furthermore, Ankita’s father revealed about an incident where Sharukh had barged into their house to harass Ankita; However, the children inside the house called the neighbors for help and Shahrukh was scolded by his neighbours. Ankita’s father Sanjeev Singh said,
They also beat him. But his behavior did not change.”
Reportedly, when Ankita refused to accept a love affair with Shahrukh saying that she wanted to focus on her career, he assured her of a job in the police. Her father revealed that despite being a brilliant student, she left school when Sharukh started harassing her. According to sources, Ankita lived in Jaruadih town of Dumka, which has a mixed population of Hindus and Muslims.

In an interview, former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi talked about this and held DSP Noor Mustafa responsible for the misinterpretation. He said,
The victim was a minor but the police presented him as an adult. This is not a normal thing, this was done by DSP Noor Mustafa to save the accused Shahrukh Hussain. The victim told about Chhotu Khan. But no action was taken. The police arrested him only after he died. The track record of DSP, who has good political influence, is questionable. A few months ago he had helped Zulfikar Bhutto, an accused in the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.”

Ankita Kumari’s father, Sanjeev Singh, worked as an assistant in a grocery store, earning Rs 324 a day. Ankita’s mother Rekha Devi passed away in 2021 after suffering from cancer. Ankita Kumari had two siblings named Ishika and Mayank Singh. While talking about Ankita in a media interview, Ankita’s sister said that she shares a good bond with her. He quoted,
I was his best friend after our mother died. But after my marriage I could not come home again and again. There was no one else in the house with whom he could share his situation. My grandparents are very old.”
Compensation
On Tuesday, August 30, 2022, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for Ankita’s family. Besides this, he spoke to the Director General of Police and asked him to expedite the investigation and transfer the murder case to a fast-track court.
The accused is smiling without any remorse
On August 23, 2022, Shahrukh Hussain, the main accused in the murder of Ankita Kumari, was seen in a video smiling proudly and showing no remorse as he was being arrested for committing such a gruesome murder. Soon after the video of Shahrukh smiling went viral on social media, many netizens showed their anger on social media and demanded immediate justice for Ankita Kumari from the government.

Soon after the gruesome murder of Ankita Kumari, various people protested against the government and Dumka police on the street and demanded immediate justice for the victim. Later, Dumka DSP Noor Mustafa was suspended for negligence and protecting accused Shahrukh Hussain. In an interview, BJP legislature party chief and former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi accused Hemant Soren’s government of not maintaining law and order. He quoted,
The DSP was initially trying to protect the accused because he belongs to a particular community. “Action should be taken against him.”
Later, Jharkhand BJP chief Deepak Prakash questioned why no Jharkhand Mukti Morcha member had yet met the victim’s family, while BJP politician Kapil Mishra assured that he would start raising funds for Ankita’s family. Priyanka Gandhi also took to Twitter and demanded speedy trial and strict punishment for the accused killer of Ankita Kumari.
AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi condemned Ankita’s death and urged that a special court should be designated to hear the case. He said,
I not only condemn, but also demand the Jharkhand government to handle this matter properly. If possible, a (special) court should be designated there to hear the case. He (the accused) should be given the harshest punishment as per the law.”
