Jack’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s was first announced in 2021, and since then, Jack seems to have forgotten about most of his family members.

“Jack’s people knew he wasn’t here anymore, but parts of my husband did,” Suzi shared with the newspaper. “I’m going to hold on to them for as long as I can.”

Two of Jack’s daughters, Suzanne and Kathaleen, also spoke to the newspaper, with Suzanne saying that he had forgotten her.

“[He] I just stopped remembering who I was in every way… Whether it was in person or on the phone, I had no idea it was his daughter,” she shared. “I think it’s because he didn’t see me as much because I got married so young and moved away.”

Kathaleen and Suzi also said that their love for animals is still there.

He would have worked until the day he died. She just dropped out because of Alzheimer’s disease,” Kathaleen said. “I was embarrassed by that. He lived in fear of the public finding out.”

Suzi adds that “the showman is still out there somewhere… Jack loved making people laugh as much as he loved taking care of animals.”

Jack served as director of the Columbus Zoo from 1978 to 1992, before assuming the position of honorary director emeritus.
