Amoj Jacob is an Indian track and field athlete and a banker who is famous for his participation in 400 metres, 800 meters and relays. He won the gold medal in the men’s 400 meters at the 21st Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships in March 2021 with a timing of 45.68 seconds. Amoj Jacob has secured his place in the relay team for the Commonwealth Games 2022 to be held in Birmingham, England.

Amoj Jacob started his athletic career as a 100 m runner, but his coach Arvind Kapoor advised him to train for the 400 m and 800 m running events. On 5 May 2016, he won the boys’ 800 meters event at the 4th Junior Federation Cup National Athletics Championships at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.
In June 2016, Amoz competed at the Asian Junior Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in two categories, men’s 800 meters and men’s 4×400 meters relay. In July 2017, he along with his teammates Kunhu Muhammad, Arokia Rajeev and Mohammed Anas competed in the men’s 4×400 meters relay at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar with a reported time of 3:02.92. On 18 November 2017, he competed in the Junior Boys’ U20 400 meters with a timing of 46.59 seconds at the 33rd Coromandel National Junior Athletic Championships 2017 held at the Acharya Nagarjuna University Athletics Ground in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.
In the same year, he recorded a timing of 46.50 seconds in the men’s 400 meters event at the 57th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. In April 2018, Amoz competed in the men’s 4×400 meters relay at the Commonwealth Games held in Australia. In 2020, Amoj was part of the men’s 4×400 relay at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. In 2021, he competed in the men’s 400 meters event at the Indian Grand Prix-2 (held in Thiruvananthapuram) and Indian Grand Prix-3. (in Bhubaneswar) with a reported timing of 46.00 seconds and 45.70 seconds respectively. Amoj competed in the men’s 400m category at the 21st Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships in March 2021 at the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala with a timing of 45.68 seconds.

In March 2022, Amoj won the men’s 400 meters race at the Indian Grand Prix-1 held in Thiruvananthapuram, finishing with a time of 45.98 seconds.
In June 2022, Amoj won the men’s 400 meters category at the 61st National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai with a timing of 45.68 seconds.
Amoz Jacob competed at the 2023 World Athletics Championships held at the National Athletics Center in Budapest, Hungary. Amoj Jacob, along with Muhammad Anas Yahiya, Muhammad Ajmal Variyathodi and Rajesh Ramesh, finished fifth in the 4x400m relay race final with a timing of 2:59.92 seconds. This was the first time in the history of the championship that India made the final of the competition, which was eventually won by the United States.

Facts/General Knowledge
- Amoj was interested in football while studying in school. He was spotted by his school’s physical trainer Arvind Kapoor during a football match. He advised Amoj to specialize as a runner. In an interview, he talked about how he prepared Amoj as a runner and said,
His height, his gait and his stride were suitable for a 400/800 meters athlete. He already had incredible speed, so I worked on his stamina.
- Before the start of each sprint and relay event, Amoz religiously follows a ritual in which he recites a prayer.
- In an interview, when Amoj was asked how he took the defeat in the tournament, he replied,
To be honest, I don’t think much. This has been my motto. I don’t get disappointed even if I lose. So I will take it step by step. Whatever happens will be seen.”
- In 2018, during the Commonwealth Games in Australia, Amoz fell on the track in the 4*400 men’s relay. His teammates ran towards him to remove him from the track, causing him to be ejected from the game.

No, I wasn’t surprised, I was ready for the time. I thought I could run around 45.5, but at the Federation Cup, my judgment was quite wrong. I ran the first 300 very fast, then I got tired.”

- In 2022, Amoj Jacob suffered an injury during the men’s 4×400 meters relay at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships. As a result, he had to withdraw his participation from the men’s 4×400 meters relay at the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Eugene. In an interview, talking about his injury and preparation for the upcoming sports tournament, Amoj said
I had recovered from a hamstring injury and resumed training, but I still had not achieved my peak fitness, so I decided to withdraw from the world competition. Now I am working to get back to full fitness and am happy with my progress. If everything goes well then I will be ready for the Commonwealth Games. But I need to do some races before the Commonwealth Games to check my fitness. But I am not sure about participating in any competitive event before the Commonwealth Games.
