Ammon McNeely, one of Yosemite’s most famous rock climbers, has died at the age of 52. Although there are no recorded details of the event, those close to McNeeel claim he slipped off a cliff near Moab for reasons unrelated to climbing. McNeely has climbed approximately 60 pitches on El Capitan in the valley and spent hundreds of days on the wall. According to Yosemite photographer Tom Evans, “McNeely has been the driving force behind wall climbing in Yosemite for years.”
He had a unique personality and was well respected among climbers in Yosemite and abroad. He will be missed and remembered throughout the Valley. My condolences to the family and friends. McNeely’s El Capitan speed climbs are numerous and outstanding. Brian McCray and Chris McNamara achieved the first multi-pitch one-day ascents, including the Early Morning Light Wall and the Atlantic Ocean Wall, in 2004. McNeely, Dean Potter and Ivo Ninov climbed the Reticent Wall in 2006 in 34 hours and 57 minutes, beating the previous a record for five days.
In addition, he and Skiy Detray set the record for the fastest ascent of Scorched Earth in 2011. McNeee set the Zion record for the fastest ascent of three Streaked Wall routes in one day: Latitudes 5.9 A4+, Rodeo Queen 5.10 A4+, and Story of the Scorpion 5.10 A3+. He is known for his daring BASE jumps and has been involved in numerous accidents, one of which resulted in the loss of his right leg below the knee in 2017.

Ammon McNeely, one of Yosemite’s most famous rock climbers, has died at the age of 52. McNeely used some of his BASE gear to make a tourniquet on his leg because the blood was “spraying everywhere”. He phoned his friends to inform them that he might pass out and that he needed a helicopter. His EMS friend Dave, Brent, Andy and several Moab locals discovered him on the edge about 45 minutes later, where they attached ropes and drilled a three-bolt anchor before search and rescue officials arrived. McNeely thinks quick thinking and action saved his life. He lost three liters of blood by the time the helicopter took him to the hospital.
