Ami Modi is a 47 year old woman who was born in New York, America. She has been interested in designing diamond jewelery since a young age. Ami and Nirav Modi studied at the same college, The Wharton School, USA, and knew each other well. They remained in touch when Nirav left college to join his maternal uncle Mehul Chinubhai Choksi’s company Gitanjali Gems Limited. She later married Nirav Modi and became his business partner in his diamond jewelery business.

Controversy
In February 2018, Punjab National Bank (PNB) filed a complaint against her husband Nirav Modi, accusing him of defrauding the bank of approximately Rs. 11, 400 crores. According to reports, along with Ami, her uncle, father-in-law Mehul Choksi and brother-in-law Nishal Modi are also involved in this fraud case. The bank claimed that they were involved in a fraud in the issuance of bank guarantees or Letters of Undertakings (LoUs) at the bank’s mid corporate branch in Brady House, Mumbai. However, she left India with her children on 4 January 2018 to protect herself from investigation. The Enforcement Directorate handles this matter.
