Since then, the Ailey Company has performed in front of approximately 25 million audiences in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents. Now, millions more have watched the company’s work online and on television. The company was named an “important American cultural ambassador to the world” by a 2008 U.S. legislative resolution that celebrates the ethos of the African-American cultural experience, while preserving and developed the modern American dance tradition.
Ailey drew inspiration for his dances from his “bloody memories” of Texas, blues, spirituality, and gospel. This led to the development of “Reveals”, his most famous and critically acclaimed work, which is now celebrating its 60th anniversary.
The company is now working on Ailey’s goal by showcasing previous important works and launching brand new ones. Ailey troupe’s repertoire includes a total of more than 235 works by more than 90 choreographers.
