Childhood and education
Akbar Al Baker was born in the Indian city of Mumbai. As a child he attended St. Peter’s School, a residential school in the Panchgani Hills of Maharashtra, India. He eventually moved to Mumbai, where he attended Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics. He is a certified private pilot.

Career
In 1997, Al-Baker was appointed CEO of Qatar Airways. Prior to this position, he worked at the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority. He was previously the president of the Qatar Tourism Authority. He is the CEO of Qatar Executive, Qatar Airways Holidays, Qatar Aviation Services, Qatar Duty Free Company, Doha International Airport, Internal Media Services, Qatar Distribution Company and Qatar Aircraft Catering Company.
Al-Baker oversaw the construction of Hamad International Airport, which began operations in May 2014 and is now home to Qatar Airways. In 2017, the airport served all incoming and outgoing flights from Doha.
Al Baker announced in June 2019 that Qatar Airways will acquire a stake in a sixth offshore carrier before the end of the year. The company has not yet been named, but will join International Airlines Group, LATAM Airlines Group, Cathay Pacific and China Southern Airlines Co.
Al-Baker is a member of the Executive Committee of the Organization of Arab Airlines, the Board of Directors of the International Air Transport Association and a non-executive director of Heathrow Airport Holdings.
Al-Baker was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Oneworld Alliance in May 2021. Al-Baker’s mother is of Indian origin.
