AI-generated fake Drake and The Weeknd song submitted to Grammys and eligible for nominations, Recording Academy CEO says

Anonymous artist Ghostwriter could be nominated for a Grammy for a song whose vocals aren’t even real.

The AI-generated track “Heart on my sleeve”that imitates Drake and The Weeknd, was presented for next year’s Grammy Awards, the artist’s representatives confirmed to the New York Times.

The song was nominated for best rap song and song of the year and, despite the use of AI, said Harvey Mason, Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy. The New York Times that it was well.

“On the creative side, it’s absolutely eligible because it was written by a human,” he said.

Categories are awarded to composers, not performers. In this case, the lyrics were created by Ghostwriter, with AI interpretations.

Last April, “Heart on My Sleeve” was removed from streaming services after generating more than 600,000 plays on Spotify and 275,000 views on YouTube.

In a statement to BillboardUMG denounced the tracking and use of AI, saying the song releases “demonstrate why platforms have a fundamental legal and ethical responsibility to avoid using their services in ways that harm artists.”

“As soon as I heard that record I knew it was going to be something we were going to have to deal with from the Academy’s point of view, but also from the music community’s and the industry’s point of view,” said the CEO of the Grammys.

“When you start seeing AI involved in something so creative, interesting, relevant and current, it immediately makes you think, ‘Okay, where is this going?’ How will this affect creativity? What is the business implication for monetization?’”

The Recording Academy also announced Artificial Intelligence “protocols” earlier this year, via Billboard.

“Only human creators are eligible to be considered, nominated for, or win a Grammy Award. A work that does not contain human authorship is not eligible in any category. The Academy may disqualify any entry in a particular category if it determines, in its sole discretion, that such entry does not incorporate significant, more than de minimis human authorship that is relevant to such category. {The Academy offered a definition of that term: “De minimis is defined as something lacking meaning or importance, so minor that it deserves to be ignored.”

Ghostwriter returned with a new AI-generated song titled “Whiplash,” featuring vocals that sound like Travis Scott and 21 Savage.
