News about Abraham Lincoln
The Lincoln Party is gone. Donald Trump said on Fox News that his achievement may have surpassed that of the 16th president, 50 years after the civil rights backlash that led to Richard Nixon’s Southern strategy.
“So ignore Abraham Lincoln, because he’s done a great job, although that’s always been questioned,” the president said, “and I think I’ve done more for the black community than any other president.” Descendants of slaves freed by Lincoln? They probably won’t agree.
Lincoln Miracle Review: How Republicans Chose Their Great Redemption
Trump grew up in the Queens borough of New York, but his heart is for Dixie. He hailed Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, as one of America’s finest generals and argued that honest people could be found on both sides in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017, when white nationalists marched and a protester was killed. In fact, Trump has reshaped the Republican Party to reflect himself.
Edward Achorn presents the Lincoln Miracle, an in-depth analysis of Abraham Lincoln’s successful attempt to win the Republican presidential nomination at the 1860 convention, against this sad backdrop.
Achorn was a Pulitzer Prize finalist who loved baseball and the 19th century. Lincoln’s Miracle, Achorn’s second book about Lincoln after every drop of blood, tells the story of his second inaugural address in 1865, which is his fourth book overall. The prose in Lincoln’s Miracle is refined, colorful, and easy to understand.
The reader knows that Lincoln will win, the United States will soon enter the war, and the Confederacy will win at great cost. Prior knowledge is not taken away. The concepts of Lincoln’s Miracle are timeless, and its subtitles fit perfectly: Inside the Republican Convention That Changed History.
Achorn cleverly laid out the personalities, demographics, and competition that influenced the 1860 election and nomination process. The Whig Party was exhausted and disintegrated by indigenousism and slavery. Catholicism strongly opposes. There is also an anti-German feeling. The opposing forces of abolitionism and Confederate preservation rocked the country. Democrats are divided while Republicans are divided. Total failure, democratic convention. There is no sign of compromise.
Three years ago, the Supreme Court incorporated slavery into the constitution with the infamous Dred Scott ruling. Not much can be done, except war or change the constitution. Law evolved from slavery.
In 1858, during the Republican convention in Illinois, Abraham Lincoln delivered what would become known as the “The House Divided” speech. He quotes a passage from the book of Matthew that says, “A house divided against itself cannot stand,” clearly showing his Baptist upbringing. Despite being an atheist, Lincoln still took the Bible seriously. Achorn claims to think that “pain and failure are endemic to human life.” Humans are only capable of so much. The “incomprehensible” God is not responsible for the rest.
