controversies
Paradise Paper: financial data leak
The Paradise Papers revealed that rich and powerful people around the world, including some in India, hid their money in secret accounts in 19 “tax havens”. The investigation, led by The Indian Express and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, focused on suspected abuses by large companies and their offshore locations. In the case of Abhyudaya Jindal, leaked documents reveal that in 2013, a law firm asked Appleby (the company under investigation) to appoint Abhyudaya as a director in Jindal Stainless Group’s two Mauritius-based companies – Jargo Investments and Vavasa Investments. Was asked to appoint. However, Appleby was concerned because being an Indian, Abhyudaya Jindal was at risk of ’round tripping’ (tax evasion or money laundering). This was related to a loan of $35 million given to two Jindal group companies. In response, Abhyudaya Jindal clarified that Jargo Investments and Vavasa Investments, which were once part of the Jindal Stainless Limited promoter group, no longer hold shares in the company since 2014. I invested in India with those funds. Abhyudaya also mentioned that he was a non-resident when these companies raised funds.
