Abhishek Singhvi is a senior Indian lawyer of the Supreme Court of India and a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). He represents West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi was born on 24 February 1959 (Tuesday) (age 61 years; as in 2020) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He studied BA (Hons) from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University and went abroad for post-graduation. He did MA and PhD. from Trinity College, Cambridge where he received his Ph.D. Completed. Under the guidance of Sir William Wade, a constitutional lawyer. The topic of his doctoral dissertation was emergency powers. After completing his PhD, Abhishek Singhvi went to Harvard University to study PIL and this is where his journey in the field of law began.

Abhishek Singhvi was born in a Marwari family in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Abhishek Singhvi’s father, Dr. Lakshmi Mall Singhvi, was a scholar of Jain history and culture, and was one of India’s top lawyers. His father was appointed as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and his service period as Commissioner was the second longest, from 1991–1997.

His mother Kamala Singhvi was a housewife. In 1982, he was married to the famous ghazal and Sufi singer Anita Singhvi. They have two sons, Avishkar Singhvi and Anubhav Singhvi.

After completing his formal education and PIL from Harvard University, he came back to India and started working as a lawyer. In the year 2001, he was appointed as the national spokesperson of the Indian National Congress (INC). He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2006. In August 2006, he became a member of the Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances and Law and Justice and remained a part of it till July 2011. He became a member of the Joint Committee on Offices of Profit where they examine the constitutional and legal situation relating to office of profit (August 2006 – August 2007). He was also a member of the Privileges Committee and a member of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of External Affairs. In July 2011, he became the Chairman of the Justice Member Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and General Purposes Committee. Abhishek Singhvi has been the spokesperson of the Indian National Congress since July 2012.

  • Abhishek Singhvi got into trouble when a CD containing objectionable recording went viral in the media. It was reportedly said that in the CD, Abhishek Singhvi was in a controversial situation with a woman. However, Singhvi denied any such allegations and said that someone had tampered with the CD. Amidst this turmoil, Singhvi decided to step down from his post as head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee. It was found that the CD was leaked by an old employee of Singhvi, and the case was taken to court. However, the matter was later settled out of court.
  • The politician was embroiled in another controversy when he failed to submit the required documents to show proof that the claims made by him before the Income Tax Settlement Commission were valid. Later he was fined and asked to pay Rs. Fine of Rs 57 crore. Payments from his account were used to pay the fees of his legal assistants and purchase office equipment such as laptops for his staff.
