Tom’s father, John Alan Luginbill, is a football coach. He was born on November 13, 1946. Luginbill began his college coaching career as an assistant at Pasadena City Collegiate. He worked there twice, first from 1968 to 1971, and then from 1974 to 1976.
Later, Luginbill was hired as head coach in 1977, and led PCC to the Jr. Rose Bowl and National Championship. He started his college career with the Arizona State Sun Devils. He was an assistant coach at Arizona State University for two years. Additionally, he returned to Arizona State after a year at the University of Wyoming. In 2003, Luginbill served as the head coach and general manager of the Detroit Fury of the Arena Football League. He is also married to Susan and the father of twins Tom and Kerry.
