A little more than a month after the cause of David Gail’s death was made public, more details are known about the Beverly Hills 90210 The death of the star has been revealed.
The late actor passed away at the age of 56 on January 16. His official cause of death was anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a brain injury resulting from a lack of blood.
This follows resuscitation from cardiopulmonary arrest due to drug intoxication. Among the substances found in his system were amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol and fentanyl.
According PEOPLE, David Gail’s mother, Mary Painter, released a statement regarding the actor’s sudden death. “It breaks my heart to know that my son died this way,” she said.
Painter noted that Gail had become dependent on medicine many years ago due to multiple surgeries on her hands and wrists.
“He lived in enough pain to keep him from working for almost a decade,” he continued. “Relief is only achieved through total disability, physical therapy and painkillers.”
Painter then explained how David Gail had struggled to stop taking medication. He then adopted a more “eastern pain management” approach.
This included undergoing acupuncture and using natural medicines. “I can only assume that his former opioid dependence played a role in self-medicating from uncontrolled sources.”
Painter also said he hoped his son’s death would help raise awareness about the dangers of drug addiction, as well as the fentanyl epidemic.
“David’s death shines a light on the countless innocent victims of pharmaceutical addiction and the fentanyl epidemic that has claimed the lives of so many of our sons and daughters,” he added. “Please keep David and others struggling with pain or dependency in your thoughts and prayers.”
Gail is survived by her mother, sister and son, Guthier.

Days after David Gail’s death, his sister Katie took to Instagram to announce his passing in a touching tribute.
“There has barely been a day in my life when you were not by my side,” he wrote of his brother. “Always my partner, always my best friend, ready to face anything and anyone. [with] For me, bears will never be the same again.”
David’s sister Gail then said she would hug him tightly in her heart every day. “You beautiful, loving, incredible, fierce human being, I miss you every second of every day, forever, there will never be another.”
David Gail began his acting career in 1990 appearing in Growing pains. He got the role of Tom in Beverly Hills 90210 in 1991 for one episode. He returned to the series as recurring character Stuart Carson in 1993.
